Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Ketchup was covered in an earlier post but how about tomato soup? Would that be an acceptable substitute for the tomato paste? Ingredients: Tomato puree (water and tomato paste) High fructose corn syrup (more sugar) Wheat flour salt spice extract (not sure what this could be) vitamin C citric acid F...

Best method to clean a still.

I hope this hasn't been covered in to much detail before. I searched for clean +still +how and it returned ...to many common words. :( I was wondering what the best method to clean a still was. I read the parent site and cleaned the boiler with a lye solution, then rinsed, then used my carboy brush ...

Re: Distilling beer worth it?

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'll not attempt it. Being a novice, all that trouble would be better spent on running sugar washes and similar easy stuff before I attempt that feat.

Distilling beer worth it?

Hello to all, I have an opportunity to obtain 2 cases of at to out of date beer for $10. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to distill. It's Busch beer, which I don't drink so would be of no use to me as is. I have a quarter keg as a boiler and my gut feeling is that I'd have to run only a case a...

Re: Maybe I didn't do so bad the first time.

Cool, now I feel a little better. Now that I have most of the bugs worked out and starting to know the still I'll have a bit more patience running washes. I do have two 48 hour turbo packets that I'll need to use up, so from reading the turbo wash thread, I'll just split the packets and go easy on t...

Maybe I didn't do so bad the first time.

I'm hoping a mentor can help with my descriptions of the first "keeper" product I obtained. In previous threads you might remember my questions about my still. Anyway, being kinda disappointed at the first "keeper" product that I obtained I now am not so sure its "garbage&qu...

Re: Water Supply?

Then again, the obvious...use your "water purifier" to do just that. :D

After all, that's what we're all building right? :)

Re: First Questions and guidance needed

Next run I'll try to run it hard in strip mode to see how well it takes it. I've revamped my coolant pump to a 600 gph bildge pump that I can run off my Astron variable power supply to adjust the flow rate. The product that I recently collected seems to have the wet cardboard smell but I haven't run...

Re: First Questions and guidance needed

First, Thanks MuleKicker, your advice was spot on. I removed the reflux tube, patched the hole and moved it to the top of the still. I couldn't find copper scrubbers so I just removed and packed the SS ones under the reflux tube. I also put one scrubber in the condenser coil. What a difference those...

Re: First Questions and guidance needed

... your condenser is on the small side... Yep, never heard that one before.  Coolant flow through the condenser is pretty minimal so I guess the coolant temp will come up if I can increase reflux and quantity of vapor actually getting to it. I'll try changing out the SS with copper, th...

First Questions and guidance needed

I posted in the "My first..." thread about...well...my first, and here are the specs for the Bob Lennon style that I made: boiler - SS ¼ keg column - 1½"×40" copper, hand made delrin bushing to fit the keg flange. packing - 11 stainless "Choir Boy" scrubbers (I also hav...

Welcome and "My First..."

Hello to all! A newcomer here, although I've been making my own wine from kits and grape juice for about 3 years (next year should be the first year I can harvest my grapes). I recently completed a Bob Lennon style valved reflux still and have successfully retrieved about 2L of 86% (+ some tails) fr...
