6 plates , 4 that are caps and 2 that are downcommers?
Bit confused by that, do you mean perf plates?

Re: What size emmersion chiller is every one using?
I just had a chance to buy a chiller very inexpensively but passed (copper alone was likely worth the asking price tho)...because I couldn't figure out when I'd ever use it. I do AG mashes and follow a recipe that calls for a 90 minute rest (preferably longer) for malted barley to fully convert... ...

Try running it on 5-6 plates, don't think that there would be a discernable difference.
If you like it, source a keg, get a new RC and PC and sell it, for the proceeds you can buy proper hoses and valves.

Re: AG Sour Mashing and Cuts questions
Empty the fermenter totally. When doing a new batch add 10-20% of backset from the last batch you ran. Sounds like you run singles, Ive no experience with that other than through a player so can't advise there. Other than try once to do strip and spirit run to see how the quality of the product comp...

Doesn't look like a heap of headroom or extra water covering the element.
Since they used it in a commercial distillery I assume it had to pass some kind of safety inspection

Re: Look over my first AG plan?
Ah yeah, at a commercial level that's the approach. I only take cuts on the spirit run and add them all back to the first strip run. Think I had 6 or so ferments that size to make for one spirit run, like I said, lots of work. Strip and spirit run will work for sure, just pay attention to the cuts a...

Re: Look over my first AG plan?
Not sure what Jesse's process is. Stripp down to 0, then do it again, then do a spirit run. I just did it, you have to mash alot to have a full charge for the spirit run. Nice big keepers run in the end though. I do all my mashing on the grain in a barrel. Just dump all grain in and hot water on top

Re: Look over my first AG plan?
For my pallet I prefer more malt. Your recipe conforms to the rules of Irish single pot ( redbreast, the spot range) , it needs to be at least 30% malt, at least 30% unmalted and max 5%, you're in the range. I tend to get closer to 70% malt so I'm flirting with the limits of the allowed by range, no...

On par with small barrels.
You obviously need to add the oak in the jar but looks a decent option.

Re: Anyone want to share shipping of a pallet of barrels??
The Spanish crowd was about 80€ delivery, bigger barrel cost more obviously.
The Hungarian crowd the shipping was about same as the barrel.
Both shipped to Ireland, you'd probably have to pay a brexit tax though

The smaller barrel in the picture is from wineoakbarrels that you requested about.
Class barrel, have it 4+ years never leaked a drop.
Cheaper but deffo good quality.
Have to pay by bank transfer, spigot came with silicon seal so I just be replaced it with ss

220€ for 16l American oak to the door.
Took two months as they are busy.
Not great communication but a lovely barrel.

Just type doc.new in the browser.
If you have a windows laptop and a printer connected clicking ctrl and P at the same time will bring up the printer properties

I've yet to use any of my virgin oak to age single malt. It seems like a lot of American Single Malt is new fill barrels. I see that as a good thing, as it will differentiate American Single Malt and it will ensure that used bourbon and rye barrels will continue to be exported for all of the other ...

Are you using the OD drawings as homage to OD or to make a great plater?
I think there have been lots of improvements in the design of players since but if it's about getting that OD like then go for it.
I'll be looking for your build thread.

Got there quicker than I'd expect, heard 2 months+ seems to be the norm.
You should get your son to repair the old still as "punishment".
Would be nice bonding time and getting him in to the hobby

Nice write up.
How long was delivery, I would have thought repairing the old still to be quicker if it was just a matter of time.
Either way, looks a decent still, the yellow jars just highlight why it's so important to do sacruns

Re: What still to built or buy?
They are all potstills. Bar the one with the smallest plates I've ever seen, is that a 1.5 in column? Even if the plates were 3-4 in the design is very strange, a bubble cap and perf plate in one. It may work, Ive no idea but I'm not aware of anyone running plates like it so you would likely find it...

Re: Best yeast for a very grainy flavour?
[/quote] I get a lot of “grain” or “bread” flavors in a baker’s yeast ferment. Yes, plain old baker’s yeast from the grocery store. You could try some exotic beer yeasts, like a Belgian ale yeast or even the Chico ale yeast. They’ll make a lot of good flavors in the beer. But more importantl is the ...

Re: Minimum space needed for a shed?
I've a small shed, 6 by 10 if I remember correctly. It's for all my garden/ camping/ tools/stilling gear. So if you are going to have a shed for stilling only you'd be able to get away with less, not much less though. 6ft of the end is as small as I'd like it, even at that stuff is encroaching in to...
