Re: question on diluting.....

When I started I was very anal about keeping notes as I went . It was like a journal of my runs where I would log time to get up to temp, the way it smelled when it first started , I wrote down the temps and reading on the parrot and the way it smelled at all the different stages of the run. I did i...

The best I've ever made was a 5% all grain. Ferment slow in cool weather and single run nice and slow. It will make you want to spit everything else out.

Re: Cutting 2" hole in thick stainless steel tank?

The hole saw will work just fine as long as you don't turn it too fast. Keep lots of pressure on it and lube it with blade wax or any type of cutting oil and it should so fine. I have cut literally thousands of feet of stainless with bi metal blades.

I have a barrel full that has been aging in the hay barn for 2 years now. I'm going to let it sit for a couple more years before I open it up and I might just have an east tx distillers get together when I do .

Re: Powder coating some copper this week

After ordering the ceramic clear coat online last weekend my phone rang early on Monday. It was a national sales rep for the manufacturer. He specialized in their clear coat material. He is interested to see how it performs on copper stills. He noted that as manufacturers their product is relabeled...

It's that kind of crap that draws attention to the rest of us. When the tv show fizzles out and all the glamour is gone the ones selling it will soon be gone too.

I have run propane for years without any problems. Just keep an eye on everything an you should be fine. If you have vapor escaping then you still have work to do.

I say let him try it. Spend $1000 on a boiler with a 3/4 inch head on it and a thermostat and let him find out the hard way. The OP has been warned time and time again that it will not work but refuses to listen. I say go for it and post your results.. Good luck..

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method

Corn is not corn. Yellow corn is higher in protein and ergo, oils, that effect flavor. Distillers of old used white corn. Jack Daniels, when he was taught by slaves how to distill, was taught to use white corn, and this was universally understood in the day. Shame that most use yellow corn today. W...

Re: new guy from inland north west USA

I don't see why it wouldn't work. An easy way to tell is to take 1/2 cup of syrup and dissolve it in a liter of warm water and pitch some yeast and see what happens. Take a hydrometer reading before and after and record your results . Good luck.

There is no state in the U.S. that allows home distilling. The only way to distill legally is to apply for the proper permits for a commercial distillery.

You can make more with a 15 gal boiler than you can ever drink. If you have a 50gal or larger then you can run a years worth in a weekend and where's the fun in that. If you want to open a legal distillery then get a large still, if not keep it small and fun.

I took a flat piece of copper and twisted it like a long flat screw and put it in one end and did the same thing on the other end except going in the opposite direction . The thinking was to create a spiral path keeping the vapor in contact with the cool copper longer by slowing it down and adding s...

I'm not sure how things work in you're area but around here its pretty common to go to the beer store and get a keg for the price of the deposit, usually around $35. It's a little more than what you spent but if you ever need another one for a fermenter its another option.. Good find.

I've been away for a quite a while but corn meal is too much trouble . Unless you are extremely careful you almost always end up with solids in the boiler and end up with scorched corn meal.

It looks to be a great fuel as long as you have a reliable source and dont have to store it for a long time. I talked to the owner of a candy company this week and can get alot of waste which is almost entirely sugar. I might try to run a batch with it and see how it works. I have 6 to 7 months a ye...
