Copper Pots

Another great buy from Mexico. Even a nice copper boiler with a weldable lid
would probably be an excellent idea and easy to build.

Unrelated to the subject, but while you are there; take throwaway luggage and buy a locally made leather set. Super value.

Thanks for the tip.

I have chucked my glass thermometers. I never broke one over the years, but the worry was always there. Harder to read. I have now opted for meat digital thermometers. I really like the guys with the alarm. This I use at the top of my boilers because(unfortunately) they don't indicate fractions of d...

No, the column is not insulated. I read posts about it and the idea was up in the air so i never bothered. If I don't sit there and constantly adjust the element control it can get as high as 95C. The temperature constantly rises and i have to keep turning the heat down. From reading posts here mos...

Hi Cadbury, Relax. Your reflux still is operating correctly. My new reflux still looks almost the same as in the picture, except my condenser is housed in 2" copper, I presume like yours. My boiler heating element is 750 W. At a withdrawal rate of 240 ml of ethanol per hour or 4ml. per minute o...

I see, that would have been probably one of my many mistakes. Can you recommend a fermenter? Are we talking a five gallon bucket, trash can or does it need to be a stainless steel pot? I was a winemaker, from concentrates and homegrown raspberries. One year I had a large crop of potatoes at my weekend getaway place, grown above ground, under straw (another story). I would go by purity of your final product, rather than manufacturer claims. The rate that you'll be able to fractionally distill is also (somewhat) dependent on the alcohol concentration of your wash. Its possible that they got those numbers by distilling something that was already 70%, for exampl...

Very interesting stuff, but getting confusing for some.

What would be very helpful, for this forum, if possible would be a diagram of:

a. a fractioning still.
b. an internal reflux still

Could anyone accommodate.

Birdwatcher, I have seen them at Wal-Mart many times, 120 refers to quarts, so should be about 30 gals. Just thinking out loud here; but assuming this is an insulated metal container with a hinged top; through that drilled hole in the top you could dangle an appropriate wattage aquarium heater to h...
