Started a 70 L sugar wash (sugar/tomato puree/citric acid/water). Went for a 1.06 SG this time rather than the 1.09 of my previous wash, I'm curious whether there will be a difference in taste (which might be hard to tell since the vodka from the previous batch turned out really nicely)

... I found this site which sells some smaller, computer sized radiators but the great thing is, they connect to common tubing sizes that us distillers already use (or could rig up to use). ... I also considered to make an air cooling system using some of those computer radiators and fans, but when...

How do you clear this mash when fermentation has finished? Do you just leave it to settle?

Re: newb questions.

I live in a drought affected area (gold coast, australia) so I wish to use a recirculating system for the coolant. This is what I have been thinking about. Recirc. tank with bilge pump pumping through a radiator that I aquired from an industrial aircon plant. Its 750mm L x 550mm H x 250mm W. It has...

Very nice still Hookline. How does the double coil reflux condenser work? http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/Sinker_2007/?action=view&current=19_RefluxCondenserCoil.jpg Cold water down through the center tube and then back up again through the two helical coils? I think my best bet for gett...

I totally agree with schnell. As I said earlier, the most likely explanation is indeed the presence of some impurities that just don't dissolve as well in water as they do in ethanol. Diluting the 95% alcohol with water increases the vapour pressure of these substances and as a result they vaporize ...

I'll try the 1118 if I can get some or baker's yeast next time I make a mash. I've indeed read some posts of people complaining about turbo yeasts here on the forum, but they somehow fool you to be the most attractive option when you make your first mash. High alcohol and fast fermentation, what els...

So basically what you're saying is that it takes quite some time for the ethanol and water to form a homogenous mixture and that you would smell and taste whether it has mixed well. I'd say that if you stir a cut that you've just made quite well, your taste and smell organs would by no means be soph...

New reflux still: performance and possible improvements

Hey all I'm new to this hobby, but I've been surfing around here quite a lot for the last few months. I recently finished building my first still, and I finally ran my first batch through it last weekend ;) Everything worked quite well actually, but I'm really curious if there's room for improvement...
