Re: Blackstrap vs Fancy Molasses showdown

I stripped 25 gallons of fancy molasses wash Friday. Smells fantastic! I tossed 30lbs.of brown sugar into the backset, waited for it too cool to 85F and pumped it back into the fermentor on top of the yeast bed. It took off in minutes. Great deal this wash... I'll strip this run Monday evening and t...

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

I ran a cleaning run of 5 gallons in my pot still last night. After the first quart this stuff was smelling pretty sweet. Just for kicks I wanted to get an idea on the % so I went for my parrot.. Where did I put that damn thing??? I dunno says I... Anyway, had to do without.. I saved a 1/2 gallon of...

Re: Blackstrap vs Fancy Molasses showdown

Funny as it is, I started a 26 gallon wash using the fancy version of this "brand" yesterday afternoon and its fizzilin away this morning. It smells great. I'm looking forward to stripping next week when I return from my weekend.

Thanks Gingerbreadman!

Re: Peat Smoking Malted Barley

The best deal I found on peat so far was $125 for 25lbs. Doubtful I'd need 25lbs. I can get 30lbs of peated malt barley for $77. 2day shipping for $7. I'll probably just go wit de sto bot shit. I was at the Amish market and saw Barley for .81lb and thought it might be more reasonable to malt it and ...

Re: Peat Smoking Malted Barley

I have some Irish turf(peat) and it is definitely different from gardening center peat(unless your garden center is also in Ireland..;) ) A pound of Irish Turf(peat) cost me about $10; well worth the cost, as a very small amount makes a lot of smoke. I'd love to find some Scottish peat, but no luck...

Suits me fine cause I work away from home for weeks at a time. I use my motor home for work and distilling. After all, it's a recreation vehicle right? :D

Peat Smoking Malted Barley

I have some sugar washes to perform yet but will be moving onto all grain. I want to malt and smoke some barley. I have reading a lot of material regarding barley but still have a lot of reading to do. Now for my my question is; Is the peat used the same as you would get say at a garden center? Also...

Re: 1st Ferment

I think I got off lucky on me sugar deficit experience. After reading on the parent site about fermenting at high ABV, I figured all or nothing. I added another 15lbs of sugar and put the heat to the clearing 70 degree wash. I set the heater at 80 and stirred it hard about 4 or 5 times last night. N...

Speaking of getting my bearing, Boy am I feeling stupid right at the moment. I stop by my local GFS for some supplies. I mean where else can you go for 8lbs. of yeast, 50lbs. of sugar and a couple more gallons of molasses and no one bats an eye. I love that place. Anyway, getting back to the stupid ...

I agree with Jolly on NOT using the BW to do a cleaning run. Jug wine is also dual purpose, clean with the cheap wine & save the jugs for storage of your own stuff. "how much sugar to replace molasses" +3 DON"T waste good birdwatchers use some cheepy box wine  The thing is...

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

I started this thing on the 1st. Still going strong. 70f temp probably. So I wait. My wash has held a steady 90 degree temp since it started. I noticed this morning the fizz was diminishing but the temp is still 90ish. I'm assuming it will be complete soon. I found my gravity readings to be closer ...

1st Ferment

I finished building my pot still last weekend and while I'll be doing a cleaning run using a vinegar/water mix I thought that running a batch of Birdwatcher's neutral for a sacrificial alcohol run would be a good choice. (no offence intended) I figured this would also give me some practice both ferm...

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

I'm making a wash using the 80L recipe. Added water (21 gal.), paste (24 oz)., juicefrom 3 lemons, sugar (40 lbs.) and my sg is 1.050. Does this mean I should add more sugar to reach 1.090?

On edit: Never mind. I forgot to adjust for temp...
