Just refering to those coolers, Dunder. Especially if, say, somebody  had used one for a 4 day party for sandwich meats and might not have cleaned it out as well( or soon) as they should have. Even after sanitizing, my wash developed the top floating, stringey, white, STANKIN mold overnight wh...

Re: is food grade ice chest OK for 7-8 % abv? (for a few hou

I've done, and seen discussed positively on here and other forums, using coolers as both mashing and fermenting vessels. As far as fermenting goes; one word SANITIZE! SANITIZE! SANITIZE! My experience, those coolers can be a HAVEN of nasties. I used hot bleach water and One Step sanitizer on one aft...

Thanks Spooky. Now I have to try to find a vid of them with good sound :D I see they like Queen and do a great job of it. I'm still trying to get a copy of the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. Watched it on TV when it happened. Ears rang for 2 days. I love these guys and this is a great cover. http:...

Re: Building a 4" perforated plate Red(nose) Rocket

Been wondering about using this idea to test the number of holes in each plate and crimp the rivits permenantly when the right balance is found. I was also thinking stainless might be seen better against the copper. Of course( yes olddog, I hear ya) I could test it out too if I had windows in mine.

Isn't that "The Colonel's" 220 gallon double diamond? Added a vaccuum pump to it, I see. I do see a squigley bit of plastic on the takeoff on his website. Shame, really.

Re: the penny whistle experiment

I think it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I suspect you wouldn't need it for the column to perform, but, Joe is using it to seal the reflux in place and not let it drain out of the plate when running slower or stopping in the middle of a run. My understanding of it ,anyway. The plate ...

AAAAAAARRRRGGGGGG!!!! MY EYES! MY EYES! On topic, you know those plastic stands they put in the middle of a large pizza to keep the box from getting in the cheese when they deliver it? What do you think of packing after the 2 inch, up into the 4 inch below the bottom plate? Sort of a buffer as it's expanding.

I usually only take mine out to clean when I switch washes, whiskey to rum, rum to vodka, like that. Might not need to, but i just don't want to mix leftovers, especially between rum and whiskey. For neutral, everything, including the boiler, gets a good cleaning.

Re: Propane smell???

Also, I've noticed that as I get to the end of the tank, the smell gets stronger. This happens on my kitchen stove, grill and turkey burner. DEFINATELY scour your set up for leaks and test your oxygen adjust. Mine only runs efficiently when the O2 flap is wide open.

Hey OreO, I burned up 3 fountain pumps before spending the extra( not much more, mind you) on a 1/6 hp sump pump. They come threaded for garden hose which, when cut, fits snuggly over 1/2 inch copper tube. A couple zip ties and it's water tight. The hardware store I got it at also had brass nipples ...

Re: Building a 4" perforated plate Red(nose) Rocket

Hope you're up and running soon, Joe. I'm going to have mine set up like yours, more or less plates by removing the depphlag. As you pointed out, I'll probably be using one or two plates most of the time for whisky, so I'm thinking having a shorter column will save some on heating. Maybe 2 fifteen i...

Re: Building a 4" perforated plate Red(nose) Rocket

I always wanted to build a real honest to goodness forge. It's among about a thousand other projects. Getting heat isn't a problem for soldering, it's the TIGing that wouldn't work for me. Small machine, old, WELL broken in. For soldering I can use acytelyn and either a welding tip or a rosebud if I...

Re: Building a 4" perforated plate Red(nose) Rocket

Word i got was DCEN and 2%. Tried preheating. Would lose puddle and become poreous quick as it cooled. My origional plan was to have the whole rig be copper colored except for stainless where applicable, no solder lines. 2" stuff TIGed great. When I get over my (infantile) frustration with that...

Re: Building a 4" perforated plate Red(nose) Rocket

Sorry for little progress. Been having setbacks on the dephlag. The thickness and sheer size of the copper being used on this thing is just too much for our little TIG unit. I've tried, our lead welder has tried, all no good. It just won't puddle. The thin stuff is easy to get a decent weld on. Deci...

Looking at your drawings, at this level of distillation, I don't believe there will be any differance in your flavor profile or output rate between either. As the angles are both downward and the tubing size is constant, I would suggest going with whichever one gives the best fit for your collection...

Re: 2" vs 3" Column for VM still

I think you'll find that packing a 3 inch column is going to be WAY more expensive than packing a 2 as you are filling double the volumn, and 3 inch pipe is more expensive( special order in my area) than 2". Keeping the cost down with few fittings is easy to do with a little planning ahead. One...

Re: Dimensions for the Magic flute

One major(?) difference on mine is I'm going to be feeding the column through a 4" ferrull. No 2" reduction. I've been wondering if this means I should drill more holes in the plates to allow more flow. I really dont want the extra work of building variable plates, but, I do have some time...
