Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
- a condenser doesnt reduce the pressure by a fixed amount, a condenser reduces the pressure until there is a balance between temp , power input and surface area. - the volume of the still is considered negligible, because the volume of vapor is 1000 time the volume of liquid and because there is en...

Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
That's an interesting idea, Manu. I suspect you would get whatever vapor is available when you slam the condenser on, but not much more. It will quickly stablize at a pressure/temp below boiling. it can not because the still is still being heated, so it will keep on boiling And you've benn letting ...

Re: Adding a coil to the bottem of a reflux rig
So I was running my LM/VM this weekend and I got to thinking. All the alcohol that's being refluxed is just being returned right back to the boiler, or in LWTCS's case back to a doubler. What if a coil was installed at the bottom of the column to flash off the alcohol before it gets back to the boi...

Video? I am sorry, I missed a video link. Please send that to me and I will watch it before comenting further. Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
no, it's annoying people have such a hard time understanding that when the still is pressurised the valve opens just like any safety valve. Don’t get your nickers in a wad. I wasn’t trying to pick a fight there. I think its annoying when people wont think outside their own little world. I like the ...

Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
Ok, the step that isn't clear, is; Whats the benifit of doing it that way, when your initial boiling point is the normal temp? I understand you are creating a vacuum by vapor colapse in a closed system, but the economic benifits are mute if you have to heat the wash up to nomal atmospheric boiling ...

Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
Manu, Creating a shock vacuum in a closed system before continuing with distillation is an interesting idea. The problem I see with your idea is that you would have to have a perfect sealed system yes or assume that a greater contraction than expansion can be created and maintained you need this an...

Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
it would take too many pics. Step 1 you boil water/wash in the still under normal pressure step 2 because the steam builds up in the still , the still becomes pressurized step 3 because the still is pressurized, the one way valve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Check_valve" onclick="window.o...

the one way valve just let the steam go out but no air in. It's basically a rubber plug on a spring. No human control is needed

Re: Vacuum Still, Batch reflux design- A starting point?
Did I mention the vacuum pump was optional ? All you need is a one way valve with a strong spring and a good airtight rubber joint, boil water/wash in the still , when it has exited the still through the valve, turn on the condenser. Vacuum is pulled instantly. As a reminder, in my design you only n...

you may be onto something. If you check the design of industrial columns the plates depth/ column diameter varies with height. I could never quite figure out why, but that's how they did it and perhaps still do.

Re: Still design to be checked for workability
I would suggest you get a better design to build. This one looks like someone is trying to combine a outdated CM still design with a VM still with out a valve. And no I wouldn't suggest adding a valve to it. Not as it sits anyway. The two condenser tubes would be to inefficient to be used for a VM....

hi, Copper is expensive here in VN (but stainless steel is cheap) that's one reason, other reason is that copper corrodes and that given the expense of making SPP, you may not want that other reason is that copper is soft and that it prolly wouldn't stand the tension at a similar thickness - I'm usi...

Very cool. I have always been interested in vacuum distillation, really shows how vapor pressure and pressure go hand in hand. I've never seen a full sized still like that outside a lab before. Very neat. What capacity does it hold/you run it at? Hi , sorry for the late answer, yes it's quite amazi...

Re: Condenser control still
BTW it seems that in the CC design (and everywhere there is a copper reflux coil) most of the condensation occurs at the tip of the copper coil. Because the condensation is not evenly distributed along the coil that results in not so good reflux control.
I am still looking for a good, easy coil design
