Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Correct. No scooping of spent grains - just a thorough stirring. On a 23L (6usg) batch I get ~8L of strip (down to 10%abv) which leaves ~15L of backset, ALL of which I use. It amounts to about 60% of the total volume of liquid added for each fermentation, requiring ~2T of Calcium Carbonate to keep ...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Do you stir it up completely or are we just talking about the dumping of the backset causing some disturbance? I'll stir one up in my run tomorrow and see if there is ineed a lot of wastage buried. I am on generation 20+. I now stir all the grain thoroughly before adding the cooled backset and make...

They are lighter and cheaper
BUT washes take much longer to clear in them than in glass. I did a side-by side test - same wash in both.

..... I like to oak at 100-110 ABV. Lower ABV= darker, rich caramel notes. Higher ABV= lighter smoother tasting after dilution. I'm as confused as Piss over this MR. You must have developed a very high octane rig or process. I'm happy to nudge closer to 96% abv. Or am I missing something which is c...

Re: Storing high proof neutral
But you just took you 95% and doubled the Quantity you have on hand to make 50%. So now you have double the amount of flammable liquid on the shelf. I'm just saying? 50% will certainly burn BUT it is nowhere near the potential "Molotov Cocktail" 95% would be if your house were to catch fi...

Re: All Bran Recipe
I add the water in which I've boiled potatoes for better "mouth-feel" and use the potatoes for
a potato salad (or whatever).
I've done this for several different types of washes - but haven't added the cooked potatoes themselves. I think it's most noticeable on a vodka/neutral.

Re: Plastic question - What is safe for fermenting?
I have three friends that own restaurants, can I assume that anything they get delivered that comes in a plastic bucket, is safe for fermenting? The consensus here is that you are OK with these if they previously held bulk food items and are labelled HDPE on the base - for use as a fermenter with w...

Four weeks later and my Prius still sells like a whorehouse above a Jewish deli. Mmm... Never been in one above a Jewish Deli :D but ..... 3 or more days in a swimming pool through a shock treatment (or filled with chlorine bleach solution) has done the trick for me. Time soaking is the key, I think.

Re: pukin and burpin after changin PSII to keg
What do I do to stop the flooding? Turn down the heat. Can't relate it directly to your propane heat, but I have a 3" PSII and I run it at 3000w for strips on most clean, fully-fermented washes. Rum and others are best at 2000w or less. On a spirit run I run it very slow (200-500w) through hea...

Bump I'm thinking of adapting my stainless column and would like to know if a 1/2" gate valve would suffice. I would simply cut into the take off and put the 1/2" gate valve between the column and the liebig. Then extend my column to the correct height and build a modular copper reflux coi...

It's a long time since I spent a night of fireworks, bonfires burning the effigy of Guy Fawkes (although, in these days of government cutbacks and austerity, some may sympathize with his motivation ) and a good few drinks.
