Thanks RG. I will look into making that mod. The funny thing is that I bought my son one from a store versus making him one.

Re: Homemade Yeast Stir Plate
Correct, the fan would run slowly on its own, but did not have enough strength to spin the fish.

Re: Homemade Yeast Stir Plate
I also build a stir plate just right now. Not only for yeast, more for a bit experimenting with oxidation of spirits. I also will use a pc ventilator. But I will use two magnets in a row with opposite polarity, like here: http://www.experimentalchemie.de/versuch-057.htm" onclick="window.o...

I used an audio pot. Here it is. Its overkill. I ordered 5 of the Chinese PTFE stir bugs too. https://www.radioshack.com/products/10k-ohm-audio-control-potentiometer-with-spst-switch?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googlepla&variant=20332256069&gclid=CjwKEAiAj7TCBRCp2Z22ue-zrj4SJACG7SBEHj7biOQ...

Re: Homemade Yeast Stir Plate
Der Woo. I have to tweak it. Radio Shack only had a 10Kohm pot. I am getting too much speed on the low end. I need some resistance. The way I get around the bug spinning, is by making sure the magnet engages the bug before turning on. I did not do the electronic math ahead of time, as I am not good ...

Re: Homemade Yeast Stir Plate
I had to reposition the magnet a couple of times. I have to make sure the bug is locked in before starting the fan. Otherwise it just bounces around.

Re: Lets Talk Column Packing
I haven't taken mine out ever but I only run the big CM a couple times a year. My thoughts are that the smell of tails is there because that was the last thing through, other packings do the same thing from what I've read and I've seen pictures of used SPP that have so much build up on them that th...

Homemade Yeast Stir Plate
I have been reading a lot about yeast lately and decided to start a small yeast lab for my brewing and distilling projects. All labs need a stir plate. In the spirit of the forum, I decided to make my own instead of buying one. I realize this is a rather simple project, but might motivate others So,...

That explains it. I have a few projects ahead of this. It looks a little bit beyond my capability.

I have this same still. I have had a lot of puking, but that is from pushing too hard. This has to be blockage. Are you getting too much flour paste where the arm connects to the condenser? I switched to using teflon tape to prevent this from happening to me. Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk I ...

Long Ferment
I made a 5 gallon batch of Deathwish. The ferment has been running for 15 days. The air lock pumps out every 3 seconds. I used Red Star DADY. I have not checked the SG yet, because I am intrigued by the duration. Any thoughts on letting it continue?

Re: Cloudy Vodka Again
Next time, mist test each jar for the entire run at 40% to identify where the louche is coming from, then don't put those jars in your final selection. Keep good records for the future. NZ, thanks. I keep pretty good records. I collect in pints and note the proof of each. I will try mixing each jar...

Re: Cloudy Vodka Again
I sure am struggling with making clear spirits again. I carefully separated the foreshots, heads, hearts and tails. I even blended and tasted the two hearts quarts. Things looked positive. So I mixed the two quarts. The combined proof was 155. So, I added about 1 7/8 quarts of RO water. Blamo, clou...

Re: Cloudy Vodka Again
No plastic anywhere. There is almost no flavor. I would say that it has a touch of sweetness. I thought tails too. But, think its coming in the middle of the hearts, as I had clear tails at end. Maybe I need to cut much further into what I think it hearts. My taste buds could be off too. Old age set...

Recipe of wash? Single or double runs? What was the proof of the tails cut? What means "good equilibrium"? Can you control the reflux cooler to 100% reflux, 0% output? Der Wo. It was a 5 gallon run of Deathwish wheat. The tails started becoming noticeable around 140. I collected down to 8...

So, last year, the Omnibus Bill didn't go to a vote until December 15th. Looks like our wait is nearing the end for this pass in the US.

If you are not very handy with tools, why try to make a boka? Why not start with a pot stil at first? It is a lot of fun too, I can assure you. I can not weld or solder myself, but I can drill holes, cut pipe, buy parts and screw things together. I think one has to understand ones own limitations a...

We were in touch with Senate Finance at the end of last week, and are following up again today. They are also working to get this through, as it has immense support. However, it is in Sen. McConnell's hands to put it to the floor. Rick Brewhaus, are they planning to attach it to the Omnibus Bill? I...
