Distillery Hand Sanitizer

Post by BourbonStreet » Wed May 20, 2020 9:56 am

I found a store with several cases of 80% “hand sanitizer” from a distillery. It doesn’t contain isopropyl or bittering agents, just ethanol and peroxide. It smells like heads and tails mixed. Could this be redistilled into a decent liquor?

I doubt it!

We made gallons and guess what we used? Heads, heads and more heads mixed with appropriate Hydrogen Peroxide, coconut oil, tea tree oil.

If it were usable booze, it probably would not have been used for Hand Sanitizer.

Besides, was this cheaper than fermenting your own?

I didn’t buy it; someone I know did. I figured it wasn’t usable, but I was wondering what was in it. Tea tree oil? That’s some nasty stuff!

There's a number of denaturants that can be used. FDA don't require the denaturant be listed on the label. So it may have denaturant in it but you wouldn't know it unless you drank it. Places I know used a mix of Bitrex https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatonium or isopropyl or a couple other things. There were a bunch that didn't denature at all and they have been getting in trouble with the FDA. Some places used heads and redistilled multiple times.
