85 Home Beers Down The Sink
I'm not blaming anyone but myself.
The Beer Club I'm in has these exotic "assignment" beers to make each month.
Hefe-this... Stout-that... Porter-something...
I jumped in with both feet. Trouble is, I can't stand 'em. Not a one.
I should've known better as I don't like the commercial versions either.
From here out I'm sticking with plain old ales that have treated me well, are easy to make, and taste fantastic.
Meanwhile, those lousy exotic recipe home brews were purged last night.

Are they the things you could make just using ehm... some usual bakery yeast?..fizzix wrote: From here out I'm sticking with plain old ales that have treated me well, are easy to make, and taste fantastic.

Re: 85 Home Beers Down The Sink
Yah, ditto. I don't dump anything down the sink. I have a dump bucket, filled with wines my wife didn't like, or that got too stale, or leftover meads from a party, or shitty bijou that I brought back from China, or anything I make that's not fit for drinking (thought I have a very forgiving palate for my own brew).VLAGAVULVIN wrote:fizzix wrote:

Once the dump bucket gets full enough, I'll run it for a surprise and see what I get.
Re: 85 Home Beers Down The Sink
Well you guys are a lot nobler than me for not dumping.
The tastes were just so awful, I don't know if distilling would be any more than lipstick on a pig.

A good boka makes easily a good neutral spirit of anysh!t for something like infusions etc., doesn't it?..fizzix wrote:Well you guys are a lot nobler than me for not dumping.

Re: 85 Home Beers Down The Sink
fizzix,
It kinda' depends on "what" the exotics were. I've found that "domestic IPA's" can be hard to recover simply because of the excessive hops...which like juniper oils WILL carry over into the product. But malty beers, especially some of those with toffee and coffee notes make a very nice flavorful whiskey. And the "mitt hefe" beers are quite estery, which will give you a lot of banana flavors, which makes a great pseudo-rum.
I just put some "salvaged beers" on wood a week ago. I got about 4 cases of expired beers from the local opera house I work at that they couldn't sell anymore. They were destined for the drain without doubt. Fortunately for me the beers were predominantly Coors light and Bud light, both quite low in alcohol potential...definitely less than 6%ABV potential.
I stripped them in several batches, and yes...they puked in the boiler. But what the heck, I just collected the low wines and ran them the 2nd distillation. But off of the still the second pass, the spirit proof was still too low to put on wood...roughly 40-45%ABV. So, I added a little water and ran them through the 3rd distillation. The product was then at 125 proof, just right for aging on wood. And the white spirit had a great grain flavor, with a few ester notes, but no hop notes to battle. It will make a nice whiskey with time. And the jars are starting to color nicely now...a week later.
When properly aged, I'll take the "single malt" back to my manager at the opera house and we'll toast a couple to the "salvaged product".
So, next time you have beers left over, either old or even from a beer contest, go ahead and try to salvage them. You may just get something nice....for free!
Cheers.

All right, still_stirrin. I only have to be told 3 times and your tale is very encouraging.
There's still a few cases left so I'll give it a shot.
None of these are hop-heavy --mostly molasses and other confections.

The hops are what most battle with when distilling beer.
They also leave residue in the boiler...so clean your equipment thoroughly after the run.

That fat guy on the right is a state grocery store (!) manager (that made his dirty bargains). So, he hired the drunkoholic (on the left) to stage a "robbery". The dialog is more or less as follows:Twisted Brick wrote:Wish I knew Russian.

[left] To break half-a-liter?
[right] Yup!
[left] Just to pieces?!
[right] Yepp, smash'em!
[left] Arrrrgh, I'mma [choke] ya!..

Re: 85 Home Beers Down The Sink
I've made some really nice vodka from two - gallon batches of Ale, they were some of my first all grain batches. Ended up with buttery taste that I couldn't stand
6% wash at 12 gallons, stripped it, the ran through my Boka, collected everything from 94- 89% and dumped the rest
I think i had a gallon of vodka, so, qas well worth it
