That doesn't sound like tails to me. There should so few tails components coming over in the middle of the run that you shouldn't be able to smell any of them. Check your recipe. Check your ingredients, taste them. Smell your wash. Check your still, what are the seals made out of? Where is the copper, is there enough in the important places?
