Do we have any other lantern collectors here?

Post by Sailman »

One of my other many hobbies that my wife wishes that I would stop is lantern collecting. So today how's out at local flea market not expecting to buy anything and this smart in this March of 1939 Coleman 427 lantern just falls in my lap. I know it doesn't look like much but when it gets cleaned up it should be really nice.

I picked up a nice Rayco No 210 not long ago. It only needed a new wick. I wouldn't call myself a lantern collector, but I always have an eye out for anything useful that is still working. We use it when off grid.

I have Aladdin's mostly contemporary. They are silent  and put out 100watt eq.

I have had several chrome coleman's and other early models, but they work best for me

on someone else's collector shelf. I have a heavy brass tall, skinny wick lantern

4"x13", with the hook. Marked 1592 on a small soldered on brass oval, the size of a nickel.

I have never been able to identify it but it is relatively modern. India possibly?

Off topic I have early svea 123 stoves, and a "1"

Archee72, If it's not a lantern, what is it? A heater? I have a couple of larger wick heaters. 30's ?

In the early forties we lived with Mum's parents while Dad was in the army.

Ordinary kerosine lamps (paraffin to you British).

But I still remember the soft but powerful light from the Aladdin hanging from the ceiling in the
sitting room, where Grandfather listened to the news every night on the big cabinet radio.

I have carbide head lamps but they are different from that. does it run on carbide?

I found several on the net, none with the glass upper, and no fuel description.

We used to use Shellite in them. It will run on kerosene.
Used to detect Methane or lack of Oxygen, step up from “The Canary in the Coalmine” :D
These days electronic detectors are used.
When I get time I’ll post a picture of it broken down showing the gauzes etc, it was a very clever invention that saved countless lives

All of these are in working order if I put glasses on them......probaby enough parts in the shed to build another three working aladdins.
Coleman's are on a shelf buried up the back of the shed.....not had time or energy to dig them out yet.
Do I collect lamps? ....not sure....,maybe I'm just a horder of oldish things.

I have some that were leaky and beyond what I considered reparable, so they have 12V LEDs in them. They are used most days of the week rather than a few times a year.

I cleaned up the fount today. It's the part that holds the white gas or fuel. The only thing left to do is Polish it.

Bill your post made me take a closer look and discover the "glass" is actually Mica. A first for me.

Iike said before that is a Mica chimley It was used in the older style lantern before they went to glass. The door on the side was used to stick in a match and warm up the generator so it would vaporize the fuel when you tried to light it. These older lanterns aren't instant light like we're used to now, if you didn't warm up the fuel and vaporize it in the generator it would spurt liquid fuel out and you would have a fireball.

Here's a link to a website that has a lot of the odor Coleman lanterns along with some other manufacturers.

Dug mine out today, still use them when I go camping, or the power goes out.
They are all of the type made to run on Coleman fuel, Shellite or unleaded petrol......no kerosene burners amongst them.
The one far right is the oldest I think. It was made in Canada.
I read somewhere once that the 9 / 35 stamped on the tank means it was produced in Sept of 1935. That could be wrong though....I'm no lamp guru.

The following link shows some of the more unusual lanterns made by Coleman over the years https://terry-marsh.com/coleman-us-lanterns-1946-1960/ its a Company with some very interesting history for anyone who cares to delve far enough into its past.
