Hey guitar players

Post by Bigbob »

So I was up in a tree today doing some pruning listening to my music on the phone. I love some of the classic rock guitar solos and I was wondering in your own opinions, what's the best and or hardest riffs to do? Some of my favorites: Jessica- Allman Bros., dreams I'll never see-Molly Hatchet, Dreams- Allman Bros.( I know same song). A huge list more. I don't play, don't have the patience , but I love music and appreciate the work that goes into it. So what say you?

I enjoy playing a lot of Sublime. However my favorite bit would be Fur Elise. Not as good as this feller here: 2:46

Glen Campbell's ambition was to be the world's fastest jazz guitar player, he listened to Tal Farlow and decided he would be the world's most tasteful jazz guitarist. Shit camera work but great music.

Always enjoyed Bluegrass style flat pickin'. Doc Watson comes to mind. There was a local boy a while back who was a friend of Doc's and played a blue streak. Me and my wife would go to some of the local Bluegrass clubs up in Northern Virginia to listen to the guy. He played in a BG band called "Old Friends" and later "Grazz Matazz" back about 30 years ago. Was also a big fan of Chet Atkins and Arthur Smith. Big fan of the blues too - T-bone Walker, Robert Johnson, Huddie Ledbetter, Eric Clapton, and SR Vaughn to name a few.

I played some guitar when I was younger, but didn't progress much beyond playing chord rhythms. My older brother was a decent guitarist. He once learned to play a song called "Sugarfoot Rag" - took several weeks for him to get it down.

I guess now I would consider Stevie Ray Vaughn (God rest his soul) to be my favorite guitarist.

Jeez thats a loaded question. But since you said classic rock, here's one. Rik Emmet tears it up on this song, both guitar and vocals.

So many, a few other that pop in my head, Framptons solo on Do you Feel Like we do, Claptons solo on Crossroads, Freebird of course, Brian May on Bohemian Rhapsody, virtually anything by Duanne Allman or Jimi Hendrix.... so many more

Gotta include Jimmys solo on Stairway,....

Don't forget Slash. Sweet Child O Mine is...just elegant.

Frank Zappa was an awesome axeman, too, but nobody noticed cuz his songwriting stole the show.

George Harrison--the sounds he made on All Things Must Pass...

Jimmy Page. Jeff Beck. Pete Townsend.

God, I love rock n roll!

All great, all great no doubt. What I'm wondering is what is difficult for you guys to do,what do you like to do? If I could play I would love to be able to play "little Martha" by the Allman bros.

It's hard for me to remember how to play something I last played 10 years ago. Last year I jammed with an old friend that I last played with 35 years ago. We stayed away from our old tunes because neither of us could remember how we used to do them.
I find Jimi and Albert King extra challenging because of their odd left handed embouchure and Bugs Henderson kills on old Rock and Blues.
Stanley Jordan is pretty tough, his take on Eleanor Rigby is amazing.

I have always loved ac/dcs guitar work however, not being a player, you don't really have a true idea as to the difficulty level.

That and the crisp clean playing of Steven Stills. Especially "Treetop Flyer"

Just my $0.02

I could never figure what the hell Hendrix was doing, except that he seemed to be able to cover about 7 frets.

For just plain fun to play it's hard to beat funk. Funk 49 will live forever, eh, ss?

Jr high 1973 i got the frank zappa album called Hot Rats.... on that album is very little of his notorious lyric and voice....

here it is in youtube, if you forward to the time of 3:35 it is the tune entitled Willie The Pimp... starts out with violin player Sugarcane Harris, and as the tune progresses there is some of my all time favorite Electric Guitar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PegsHwCW6WY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Acoustically i have enjoyed listening to the likes of Doc Watson, Alex Degrassi , another guy that is also pretty amazing:

John Williams he can be seen on youtube also Check this stuff... the first one is a concert... i close my eyes and try to believe it is only one man playing ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdrmZmR ... 11F7F25CA3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

just a few ...
She was just a moonshiner,
But he loved her Still

A couple that come to mind not yet mentioned.
Eddie Van Halens work on Fair Warning, their 4th album. A game changer at his peak imo.
2112. Nuf said.
Frank Zappa on Black Napkins. UNREAL.
Keith 5 string Richards.
Dimebag.
Al Dimeola.
Paco De Lucia.
Leo Kottke.
The simple honesty and structure of Willie Nelson has always been a favorite.

Got to see Zappa start a show with Black Napkins at Univ of IL. in I think 79.
This after he ate bananas slowly into the microphone for 20 minutes.
The whole crowd was getting :wtf: when he broke into Black.

Derek Trucks and Susan Tadeski kill it.
Although his mastery was short lived Randy Rhoads was a mind blowing talent.

Oh yes, to all. A Derek and Susan show is on the must see list.

Funny you mentioned Randy Rhoads. Only yesterday I dug out an old issue of Guitar World from June 1987. Randy was the cover story that month. Its crazy to think he died 33 years ago. Was talking to someone about Duane Allman, there's another for the list. 44 years gone  His music is immortal.

Frank and his banana, ya that doesnt surprise me, he was the most stoned dude ever, for someone who never got stoned. I have a stack of his stuff. Love Frank

I wish he never made Wango Tango tho. I dunno what the hell he was thinking when cutting that one. I have a signed copy of that lp after standing in line to say hi Ted you rock. Then I went home and listened to it. :econfused: Only signed album I have. And maybe the worst. Even my dog chewed the corner off the jacket.

For all you zappa heads, Zappa Plays Zappa is back on tour again. Seen Dweezil and crew last time they were through here. Awesome show. He definitely picked up some of Franks gene's.

I saw the show already a few months ago. It was awesome. It was the 30th anniversary of the One Size Fits All album which they played beginning to end. (One of my favorite FZ albums.)
I also saw the show last year (and the year prior) where they played the entire Roxy and Elsewhere album (one of my favorite albums. lol). I also got to see Frank a few times before he passed.
Besides that, I think Hot Tuna is a very underrated band and Jorma Kaukonen is an awesome guitarist.
