New Absinthe maker in North Texas

Post by Ivanchuk »

I recently purchased How to Make Absinthe at Home eBook by Israel Moore http://www.amazon.com/How-Make-Absinthe ... B007HYX2XE and have since created an absinthe I am proud of on my first try. I have a 5L copper alembic still and start with 190 Everclear taken down to 85%. I get my herbs from http://www.absintheherbs.com/ and am very pleased. I may try gin one day but I will be experimenting with absinthe for the near future and hope to be sharing insights and asking questions.

Dear Ivanchuk:
My name is Scott parks. I am a reporter with The Dallas Morning News. I am writing a story on the issue of whether home distilling on a small scale should be legalized. I am looking for someone such as yourself to correspond with about this subject because I need a human face to put on my story. It can't be just a string of interviews with "Officials." If you are interested in speaking with me, please call me at 214-977-8640. Rest assured that I am not going to do anything to "out" you or put you in jeopardy -- just a chat. You can also reach me after hours on my cell, 972-639-8455.

I'm glad I stopped by this forum....I was kicking around the idea of making absinthe myself. With the website you linked that can provide the proper herbs, I just might make it now.

Thank you!

This is your first post and I approved it however we have had other writers wanting to do articles in the past and wanting to interview members of the forum. Many here would like to see it legalized but sense it is not it might be difficult to find someone willing to respond. This probably should have been posted in the off topic section and not addressed to the member that started this thread unless you are interested in absinthe in your article.

Olympic MtDoo, I am using 95% store-bought Everclear watered down to 85% per the instructions in the eBook.

Xecros, Get the eBook, you can probably harvest all of the info you need on this forum but he did a great job at detailed step-by-step instructions. I had originally planned to get local fresh herbs and dry them myself but once I saw the quality from http://www.absintheherbs.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow I will only use them. Not to mention the customer service is impeccable.

Scott, provided you allow me to remain anonymous I have no problem talking with you and plan on giving you a call.

I'm running my second batch this weekend and hope to create a post with some pics.

So far as I am concerned there is only one alcohol worth making.....My aim is to make pre-ban strength Absinthe. I am in the process of growing all my own herbs organically. I will post later!

Here is a website with a whole bunch of recipes:

http://www.feeverte.net/recipes.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/absinth ... ipe1.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/absinth ... ipe2.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

I do strongly recommend against macerating wormwood longer than 48 hours, the research is clear you get some nasty stuff if you allow it in longer than that.

Good luck

Hi Ivanchuk... I've always been a bit curious as to the claims of Absinthe connoisseurs. Is it true that it has psychotropic qualities? I know that there's a certain mystery associated with it..... I'm brand new here and your post really piqued my interest. Welcome and thanks for the information.... good luck and cheers, tortoise

Absintheur,

Thanks for the links. Kirk of http://www.absintheherbs.com who posts on here recommends not to macerate at all, I went 24 hours my first batch and 12 my second and couldn't tell too much difference.

Tortoise,

There are no psychotropic effects but it does have a different alcohol effect, it can creep up on you, the bed threatened to spin once but nothing trippy. That being said it is a great liquor to imbibe.

I will have to take a look at the site. My romance with Absinthe started almost a decade ago when I was in college. I imported a few bottle from Europe. The first night I drank it, I awoke the next morning to find post-it noted all over my house with little strange messages scrawled out in my own handwriting. Good luck and keep us posted!
