What to do with 30lbs of Wheat Bran

Post by nelsongg »

My wife needed 10lbs of wheat bran for her horse. Feed store only had 40lb bags.

What can I do with it? I saw one recipe for a mash that uses half a pound per 5 gallons for a vodka wash.

Are there any convertible starches in wheat bran? If there are, I do have some malted barley.

When I do searches, I pretty much just come up with the "All Bran Recipe" thread.

Thanks,
Greg

Wheat bran is the husk, which is mostly protein. If there's any starch left it'll be minimal. Unless you can find a protein-munching yeast, the best option might be to make breakfast cereal and sell it as an artisanal product, and use the money to buy more barley!

ScienceDirect.com lists wheat bran as being 45% non-starch polysaccharides (dietary fiber). Although it says wheat bran is undigestible, it does say it is fermentable by bacteria in the colon. Not a lot of fermentables (as we know them) but you could add some to a mash and see if you think it adds some flavor.

Maybe the funky fungi in YellowLabel yeast could take a stab at it. If you've got some kicking around you could try an experimental "mash" of a couple of kg and see what you end up with.

As there is little starch in it, that would be a waste of the Yellow Label yeast, Norman.

I might use a little to flavor a vodka run except that vodka doesn't get drunk much around here, so most of it would go into my compost to keep the worms happy and the soil fertile.
