I am kinda new to this whole thing but here it goes.......
I was reading the ingredients on a gox of grape-nuts and was wondering if i could do an all grain mash out of this. The ingredients are, in order:
Whole Grain Wheat Flour
Wheat Flour
Malted Barley Flour
Salt
Dried Yeast
Soy Lecithin
It got my mind wondering, is this possible? What would I have to do to prepare the grain first? What would be the correct proportion of water per lb? If there is dried yeast in there already, is it dead (of so repitching with Red Star Pasteur will give it nutrients anyway) or not? Will the salt affect the fermentation process?
After it fermented, I would assume it would have to be filtered then put in a pot still to see any benefit, at least taste wise.
Please give me your thoughts
Grape-nuts..... Really?

I don't thank its going to work as you thank. you whould need enzymes to convert whatever starch is in it but even then I believe it has been cooked
beyond that. if you want to try "grape nuts" Id do some thing like the gram cracker wash, useing the Grape nuts as flavoring instead of crackers.
Came back to say the yeast is dead!!

I passed on the Grape Nuts and chose All Bran instead... It was gonna be All Bran or Total and All Bran was cheaper with about the same vitamins and minerals... I have another one going too with, get this, "Gerber Cereal For Baby, Barley"... I'm hoping they'll work off and taste as good as my Graham Cracker SMOP...

You can make a decent sugar head with grape nuts though I don't know about trying to convert the starches. This is what I've done with em' here:

Dirt cheap ferment using an off brand and the spirit isn't half bad.
