Tha DH.

24 hours later, the action has slowed somewhat. There are long intervals where the airlock is very quiet. Normal?

Don't ever rely on an airlock to tell you what a ferment is doing.
Im going to say what you don't want to hear..... rip that lid off and have a close look and a listen.....you will learn what a fermenting wash looks and sounds like. How will you ever have anything to compare to if you don't.
Hell poke a finger in and have a taste too.. won't hurt it and you might learn another thing.

Well, It did have a nice foaming bubble happening this morning - Fizzing away.

Now it appears everything has sunk, and the liquid is quite calm and yellow.

Do you want lots of flavor from the bran or do you want a more neutral result?

I start by deciding what it is that I want to make, then finding out what I have to do to make it.

I just like experimenting with different things and seeing how it turns out. I’m one of that “how does this work” kind of guys.

My tastes are wide. Whiskey, vodka, liqueurs, Brandy, sambucca bourbon, etc etc.

So I’m just out to have fun.

You can make anything from a close to neutral vodka or a gin/whatever base spirit to a flavorsome whiskey style drink from an All Bran wash depending on how you distill it. You can even take a couple of different cuts, e.g. one cut for gin and one for aging if that's what you want. It helps in making distilling decisions if you have some idea of what you want to use the end product for.

Well I was quite happy with the product I got that came with the kit. All turbo stuff etc.

BUT.... I’m all for trying new things and after trading through the groups, I decided to give this a crack.

So going to need some advice lads.

She has been down for 48 hours and the activity is very slow. I can still hear it fizzing, but I am puzzled with the hydro I just took.

The temp of the wash is 30 degrees.
The Hydro reading was below 1.0. Half way in the green zone, so about 95.

Thoughts?

Umm jack . 30 degrees. .. man , this is an intergalactic forum . .. at a bare minimum you need to say if its Fahrenheit or Celsius . :ebiggrin:

And those Specific gravity readings ...... you need to be a bit more specific .... just say’n .

Around about 1.095 .... or 1.0095 .. both those are out of range on this wash :eh:

Ahaha. Sorry. Yes. 30c.

I’m not sure now to post an image but my hydro starts at 80 at the top. Then 90 then a green section To 1.000.

Right now if I test at 30c it sits at 95. Right in the middle of that green zone.

Make sense?

Sounds like he's fermented down past 1.000 and is somewhere around 0.9XX.

PoorBoyJack: Do you understand the hydrometer and what is going on with it/how to read it and what it all means? That video Still posted is aces mate. And if you want to do the calcs by hand for ABV of your wash:

ABV = (OG - FG) * 131.25

So take your hydrometer reading at the beginning, before you pitched your yeast, as your OG. Your FG is whatever your hydrometer reads now.

Or you can use this: https://www.brewersfriend.com/abv-calculator/

If you're hydrometer is below 1.000 and it doesn't move for a day or two, you might want to call it done and get ready for a run.

Hey man. Yeah I watched it and I’m learning fast lol.

Yep. Original gravity was 1.050 when I started at 30c.

I’ll see what it’s doing tonight and see how we go.

Will keep you posted.

OK the report is in.

I watched the batch all day today and no activity. Took an FG and she was sitting at 1.000 Opened the lid, no fizz. Just a nice yellowy liquid - so bugger it, I ran it.

I must have got the ingredient qty wrong. I pulled out just on 1L of 90% from a total volume 17L of wash. So it's low.

That said, this time... No turbo carbon crap, no clear etc, just transferred to the still and ran it at 50 degrees C. I also did not filter it, and at 40% it's quite a nice drop. Very similar to my original Turbo Crap Wash, but certainly a nicer taste. Even SWIMBO said it was better. I could put it through the filter, but I won't. Maybe on the next batch I will, just for an experiment.

I am happy, as I would much prefer to have what I have, than having to add all the extra turbo crap, and pay more for nothing.

SO... now I need to work out where I went wrong with my qty.

The recipe says...

Ingredients
* 3.5 cups sugar
* 4 liters water
* 1 cup crushed All Bran cereal
* 2 tbsp active baking yeast

Now... I have a cups measurer in the kitchen, but not sure how accurate it is. Also, had no tablespoon measurer, so had to make a conversion on that one too! LOL! BUT... was it 4L total volume, or 4L, plus the sugar, plus the All Bran? If so, then that's probably where I went wrong! I started with 4L of water, and then added the ingredients.

Anyways... Success none the less. It tastes good and less crap in it! A good result!

I just have to now go and read up on qty of sugar etc, to how much yeast etc, so I can really start to understand what is happening.

Cheers lads

Hey Folks...
Is it just me or is it getting harder to find "All Bran" cereals? I feel like the last time I did this I was trying to decide the "best" one of several options. Went to the store yesterday and I couldn't find ONE All Bran cereal.

This is my favorite recipe for a good neurtal spirit - easy to do and such a smoot taste!
