what temp to run for distilling

hi, im trying to figure all this stuff out but i seem to start out with 1 question and then i end up with 100 lol. but for know i am wanting to know what temp do i want for distilling? i herd 177f is the magic number is that true? and not to go over 179. thanks for reading and helping out akrandy

You don't get to choose that temperature. Thats a common misconception. :thumbdown:

Make a wash/mash, run it in the still, collect what comes out. The temp is going to be determined by whats in the still...

What ya runnin? If a pot still, the more heat the faster it runs, it all depends! Have fun be safe! :thumbup:

im running a pot still. so when im ready to run, what setting do i want to put the electric stove on?

You will need to adjust it for the proper takeoff. And depending on how clear the charge was? Higher heat for heatup. Then turning it down to adjust your output. If it wasn't cleared good too high of heat can scorch the solids on the bottom.

Be warned a electric stove cycles. Which is not good for running a still. The cycling can cause issues like surging. You really need a constant steady heat input.

like heat from a deep fryer? propane? would that be a better source and or steady heat.

Yes a lot of people use them. But safety precautions need to be observed with the open flames.

Each individual still has its own unique "sweet spot". That combination of heat in and heat loss that will produce the right taste in the product. Remember that on a pot still there is minimal fractionating taking place.

Good drinking spirit is a function of power management.
