Cooking off a 1/2 fermented batch

Post by New to distilling »

Theoretically if you distill a 1/2 finished sugar wash, what's the worst that could happen?

Foaming, puking, low yield... I wouldn't do it, personally...

Yip fair call, my wash is still ticking away, but curious anyhow. Ocasionally there must be a wash that you just can't kick start?

Nope, never had one that I couldn't find a way to make it finnish.. Heat, yeast bomb, yeast neutrients, dilute if s.g is high, calcium carbonate for ph. adjustments... There is always a way to use up that sugar.

Never had one need to go down. Washes get acidic.. mostly if sourmashing. Calcium carbonate brings it right back without the adverse effects that sodium bicarb can have.
Citric acid or lemon juice could bring it the other way if needed..

Yeast Bomb? I have 2 washers down at the moment 1x25ltr in a 30ltr drum which is going fine, the other made at the same time with exactly the same ingredents same yeast the lot (except) 25 ltr wash but in a 60 ltr drum, which is not very happy at all. Had a sip, still very sweet with hardly any activity? Any thoughts.

Is the excess drum wicking too much heat out of the wash, causing it to make the yeast colony sluggish...???

Hmm, never thought of that, my other drum has pretty much finished, so I will transfer over and see if that makes a difference. Thanks Rad.
