Gin basket placement

Post by YankeeShine »

I cant seem to find an answer after a little searching. Should a gin basket be place so that vapor goes through it, like between the top of my pot still head and the liebig or in the riser over the boiler. Or should it be placed afer the liebig so that condensed product goes through it? Thanks

Put it in the vapor path. Mine fits between the riser and the 90 degree elbow at the top of the still head. You could also put it at the bottom of the riser right on top of the boiler. I doubt it would make any difference either way.

I was thinking if you put it right over the boiler, flavor would drip back into the boiler, but if you put it betwen the top of the still and the liebig, it would drip down with the condensed product. I'm just not sure if that's what you really want or not. I'm wondering if having it right over the boiler would seporate flavors and thats desireable, or if capturing all the flavor is more desirable.

This topic has been brought up several times with different opinions. Some prefer to put it after the bend and just before the product condenser so that it doesn't fall back and plug packing or plates.

Here's another alternative that's used in Purcellville, VA by Catoctin Creek distillery.

When making their GIN, they take the output from the first distillation and soak in external tanks with a bag of essential flavourings. They called it a tea bag technique/Steeping or something similar. After it's soaked for some time, 24 hours?? They run it back through the still for a second distillation run.
