Getting hot dunder from bolier

Post by Spokerider »

Wondering how you all are getting the piping-hot dunder from your boiler.
58L full keg is dang heavy / dangerous for hoisting up and trying to pour into a pail.

Tried siphoning, but the pvc hose just melts.........further, the plastic vapors / leachates from the melting hose can't be good.
Have no ball valve drain on the keg.

How do you guys do it?

Tipped my keg over and filled a bucket. Till I added a drain valve. Would never have a boiler without a drain valve now.

PTFE, PFA and silicone tubing are rated a lot higher than hot dunder temp and it only takes a couple feet to do the job. The drain is a good idea but I've never done it and my PFA siphon is several years old.

I have a drain valve but if i didn't i would do the same as my racking setup..

in the hardware section they have the soft copper tubing in various diameters all coiled up in a roll . buy enough of some half inch to get from the bottom of your boiler to the top of the other container and add a bit of the silicone tubing to the end of the copper to go to a safe level of your receiving container then you can clamp the copper at whatever level off the bottom of the boiler and siphon the hose part, and since the copper is clamped it is less hands needed. hope it makes sense cause it is perfectly clear to me :moresarcasm:

I run the still in the evening, and just leave the dunder in the still until the next day....

Yeah, what is PFA?

I'll prolly go the copper / silicon route.....easiest for now.

When I'm not needing hot dunder, I keep it in the boiler until the next day and hoist / drain when it's cooler.......like barney said.

A way to drain and fill the pot without taking anything apart is a good idea.
Did someone mention using the still for a hot water source, works good for hot mashing water also.

Perfluoroalkoxy, aka one of the teflon formulations. I keep a little around because it's good for high proof, hi temp EtOH and cheaper than PTFE. My dip tube is a little bit of ss and there's a tube fitting on the end of the PFA to get it to behave.

I dip out what I need for back set with a half gallon pitcher
while wearing a good leather glove.
Then wheel the boiler roller stand over to the drain line
below the sink - that just happens to match the right height
and open the bottom drain on the boiler. Off goes everything
out to the "Man Cave's" own septic tank and drain field.

I first added the drain. Man it was nice. But I still had to take the still head off to fill it. So I added the fill port. And I hardly ever took it down. Fill and drain. Repeat. I just wish the drain was a bottom drain.

I used mine for hot water supply while my hot water heater was busted. Besides the mishaps because of me. It made a good temp fix for my problem.

And I have used it for heating mash water. Works great.

Went in with a couple others on this Grainger item
http://www.grainger.com/product/PARKER- ... s_pp=false" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

This looks even better price-wise
http://www.grainger.com/product/ZEUS-Tu ... s_pp=false" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

and it's the fomulation I thought was more expensive...

Would seem that the best solution would be to bite the bullet and install a drain valve in the keg. There's tons of information here on the forum about how to silver solder a fitting into a keg for a drain valve. I would think that would be cheaper and better than most of the other siphon type solutions. In the interim I would do like a couple of others suggested - just let it cool down enough to pour it out. Maybe direct a fan or two onto the keg to help cool it down a little faster.

I built a fill pipe and a drain into my keg on the getgo . Did the same when I added a thumper . I'm glad I did . Wouldn't have a rig that I had to horse around hot .

About ball valves, are some better than others?
Was looking at some 1" SS ball valves in the hardware store.......wondering if the seat / seal is up to the constant heat of the boiling wash for many hours?

Evening all - Has anyone found a way of doing a drain wirh flexible hose which will stand up to near boiling point yet ? I'm 20 metres from the nearest drain and just want to connect a hose from my pot (Has a drain tap) and stick the other end of the hose down the kitchen gulley. I thought just use reinforced garden hose - it only needs to discharge about 12 US gallons - but I really don't fancy paying hundreds for it.

Has anyone tried reinforced Garden hose ?

Needs to be got rid of quick, so I can refill from the new preheater.

PFA? Perfluoralkoxy.
Although that sounds quite expensive.

When you just want to drain it and never use it again, you could try garden hose. I did try some last week for about 30 litres and it did not melt. You could try a piece and cook it in some old pan and see what happens.

I think I've probably got enough to do that without buying any K - I've got an easywhisky to do this week in my 25 litre - I can use that for a trial - JFDI on this one I thnk - thanks mate 8)

Leave it a little while until the high heat is gone. No problems.

It's big problem if you have multiple stripping runs and only a weekend to do them in. I like to get the heat on the next strip in less than ten minutes without burning myself, so my boiler is mounted high enough to get a bucket under the dump valve.

I open the fill port on my still and fill it up out of the garden hose. Cools the hot dunder down, then I open my drain. I have a hose that comes off my drain and goes down through a hole in wood floor of my shed. Drains onto the ground and I never have to leave the shed to wash the boiler or refill it.

That's a thought - thanks for the idea Rng4 8)
