back pourch still camo.... sort of

Post by hamshine »

So im in a new house and I was thinking about setting up in the crawl space. That isn't going to work well though due to no drain limited water source"water heater" and not the best ventilation. My house is pretty old so it would take a bunch of sparky work to go electric down there as well.

So I have come to the conclusion that some sort of "blind" on my back porch would be a good way to go. It's not really that visible but common since tells me not to go running likker out in plain sight. So I was thinking a big ol wallmart tent in the yard or a kind of shed like lean to would work just to keep me from being out in the open. I used to run in the kitchen but my new stove is electric so that is no good.

I understand that the sound of the turkey fryer and a hose running into/out of a tent may still not be exactly covert but I don't think anybody will be too suspicious.

My rig is a 60 qt pot still made from a ss stock pot with a 36" 3/4" over 1/2" liebig but I also still have a 40 ft 1/2 id flake stand I could re assemble.

Thoughts?

A trellis with a creeping vine will look natural ... most anything else will look unnatural and suspicious.

Can you build a garage? Obviously, building a garage would be expensive. Adding a garage would add value to your property, you may even get back everything you put into it when you sell. Just a thought.

Good plan and it is eventually in the cards just not yet. I am looking for an temp solution to get running in the mean time because it's been over a year. So I was thinking like Ice fishing tent or something until I build a proper Likker Cave.

Build or buy a decent shed and go electric. One of the cheapies from home repo or blowes should do.

Yes. A tent with a turkey fryer in it just seems like asking to get covered in flaming melted synthetic stuff. :problem: At best a long hospital stay with multiple trips to the cosmetic surgeon. :wtf:

With vintage Buffalo skins? If so and a 10' diameter I say go for it.

hamshine,

It looks like your neighbor has a fantastic shed out back (corrogated tin roof). it seems like if you get to know him very well, you just might not have to build anything. In fact, you may even get some supplies and electricity for free if you share a little product (co-produced, of course). I am in no way advocating any sort of bartering system. Just "brewing buddies" for life kinda' relationship.

5 4×4s and 8 sheets of plywood with a couple bags of cement and you got a nice little "windblock" for your "old smoker"

if you have building codes, follow them. don't get on the wrong side of the code enforcement people.

they can and will legally do warrantless searches.

around here they take pictures from airplanes.

YMMV

so I ended up throwing a blanket over the chain link fence to block onside and hung a clothesline on across the whole back so you cant see from the alley when I hang sheets and a tarp over it. Worked great I was thinking so hard I didn't see the obvious answer..LOL

So, if you build a "green house-like" structure, the neighbors will think you're growing "healthy" plants. And who's to say if the "fog" coming out of the vents is smoke or steam? In Colorado....you've got opportunities.

Ha! I was thinking how a greenhouse would draw more attention here than a still but I guess in the "Highlands" you are OK.

Better make .it a big shed. Before you know it, you'll have it full of still'en hardware.

Sorry about the pic. Haven't figured out how to correct this.

I've been doing this under my back porch for a couple of years now. Wrapped the outsides with a big blue tarp. To keep the looky loos from seeing what's going on.(I name my little hobby "Blue Tarp Distillery". Lol.... I'm thinking of buying a pop up canopy 10x10.. The kind you see at farmers markets. My column isn't that tall, and I think there's enough space so that there is no build up of heat,or anything else.

To my way of thinking, the more you look like you are trying to hide something, the more folks are going to want to know what you are trying to hide. I don't have any suggestions for you. Just my 2 cents worth.
