Burning Shine
What is the problem when the shine burns your lips, and all the way down your throat? Some of my cooks don't, but most do. I try my best to repeat the process the same every time, but don't always get the same results.
Re: Burning Shine
More info needed. Type of still, recipe, proof you're drinking at, etc.Wannabe2 wrote:What is the problem when the shine burns your lips, and all the way down your throat? My guess, could be some sugar bite but is being drank at a high proof.

To much heads could be one cause.
Re: Burning Shine
If you call it a recipe, it's about 5lbs of sprouted corn, then boiled for about 6 hours. The juice is strained and placed in the fermenter, 10lbs of sugar and water added to make about 6 gallons, 2 tbs of Fleischmann's yeast and fermented 8-10 days. I then pour this into my copper still leaving the sediment in the fermenter and discarding it. I poured the first 10oz out and tasted it at 140 proof, very hot! Ran another quart and tasted it at 125 proof, still hot and not worth drinking. Working on cooking the next quart will proof and taste it in a minute.

Re: Burning Shine
Did you dilute the 140 proof (70%ABV) spirit to taste it?

Re: Burning Shine
Even at cask strength, it'll be too hot to taste.....especially fresh off the still.

Re: Burning Shine
You won't really taste much because your taste buds will be numbed by the strong alcohol. Not a good thing to do.

Check out the links in Still Stirrins signature. Start doing some of the required reading and you'll figure it out. That strong kills your tastebuds and could do permanent damage. Crankys Spoonfeeding thread is a good one to start with.Wannabe2 wrote:??? Re: Burning Shine
Drinking high proof alcohol (120 proof and above) will tear up your taste buds and your throat. It also sounds like you haven't any cuts. Also aging a bit is nice. Perhaps you should read kiwi stiller post on cuts right above us.^^^^^^^^^

Re: Burning Shine
This is getting very close to a safety issue - If you don't know what "70% ABV" means - damn well find out ! Then perhaps ask yourself why store bought is generally 40% ABV !Wannabe2 wrote:No straight out of the still at 140still_stirrin wrote:Did you dilute the 140 proof (70%ABV) spirit to taste it's?
[Edit ;- However it is good for your own personal wellbeing, that you did at least ASK ! ]

You are putting yourself at consider personal risk . I suggest that you finish the run without sampling any more . Then put that rig in park and study those recommended threads . Get a better handle on what you are doing before going forward .

Figure, that's going to taste hot
Best be careful, Think what happens, when someone says "Hey You'all hold my beer and watch this"
And shine is at least 10X stronger than beer

Re: Burning Shine
My suggestion would be to shut down your still, if it is still running, and don't fire it back up again until you have a firm grasp of the theories and fundamentals... All too often we see novices coming here and asking questions that they should already know the answers to... You need to know what you need to know before you need to know it and what you don't know can, in fact, kill you... Don't become a statistic...!!! The hobby will wait... Do the research... And don't just dig for an answer to a specific question because that's no way to learn this craft... There is a ton of important information that you don't even know you don't know yet... We want you to be safe and successful... Once you're maimed or dead, it's too late... You'll know when you're ready or not, and so will we if you come back with questions like the one you have asked... Right now you should feel like you're not ready because you aren't...

Re: Burning Shine
Lots wrong here. While you are reading, research the difference between a sugar wash and a mash. You went to the effort of sprouting corn (malting) but then denatured all the enzymes by boiling....And for 6 hours. So you just have a corn flavored sugar head.

I'm all about noobs asking questions but this isn't how I'd go about it....I'm sure you're not trying but this sounds a little dick'ish.Wannabe2 wrote:

I'd first start buy clicking the "HD Google Search" at the top of the page and search "burning taste" or something similar. Here's what I got:
https://www.google.com/search?rls=en-us ... ning+taste
read through some of it and if what you're trying to find out isn't there make a post sans the attitude.
In my finite amount of knowledge it sounds like you're getting some heads, maybe collect 8-10oz in glasses or jars as it's coming off and learn where your fores, heads, hearts and tails are. 140 proof is going to be hot, no doubt.
Re: Burning Shine
I met a lady who makes shine, and this is how she makes hers. I tasted some of it, and it was just as smooth as could be.Tummydoc wrote:Lots wrong here.
