adding backset or wash/mash to your distallate

hi all,

was down my LHBS this morning and while being served I overheard a sales person telling a customer who uses a reflux still to add 75ml of backset (Bourbon mash) to their collected distillate for extra flavour seeing the still removes most the flavour. is this true? or was this an inexperienced person trying to make a sale?

My first question is was the clerk selling backset? If not, he was likely repeating what he had read or done.

Woodshed had some posts on the foundation of your product being backset. Both in mash and in distillate. Be a good thing to search out when you have the time.

Edited: backset was originally spelled backseat. maybe freudian...hard to tell. :)

I did this with Melon Liqueur that I had run to make brandy.. the distillate was clear.. I added about 5% of the distillate volume of backset for color and flavor and thus my "Panty Dropper" was born.

I've read this done with Rum somewhere I think. Can't remember now but it rings a bell.. Try it and report back to us.

I often dilute my lowwine with backset before spirit run in potstill
IMHO it adds a little favor

I accidentally filled my still for a new run, and realized I had forgot to dump the backset out from the previous run. :oops:
About 2.5 gallons of mash and about 1 gallon of feints, added to 2.5 gallons of backset that was left in the still.
I pumped out about half, since the way I realized what I did by noticing how full the 5 gallon still was. :oops:
I dont wanna waste good mash, so I'm gonna run it tonight and see what I get.
Sounds to me after reading this thread it will have flavor. :crazy:

One man's backset is another man's stillage, which is another man's dunner, which is another man's vinasse...it's all the same, the name changes with the spirit that's been run. As the spirit is run off it's wash, most of the components that give the spirit it's flavor are still in the liquid that is left behind. By adding it back into the next batch to be run, the flavor of that next run will be increased, and each time this is done the flavor increases until after about the fifth or sixth time and then it's maxed out. This can and should be done to all flavored spirits. Now infecting that liquid...is another story!

i added some rum stillage to a finished spirit that was bound for aging. 1oz/gallon. turned out excellent dark rum.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

Never added to a finished product, as my backset is a dark amber, spent beer that has a distinct strong oder..Mess my clear up.
But blending Before casking? Yes I believe woodshed does it.
In small amounts I believe he said.

Now I'd never blend with wash for consumption. :thumbdown:

I just had a thought...how would backset/dunder taste if were added to a dark beer? Not a lot, just a cup or two in 5Gal.
