Still It Distilling Videos

Post by Jes2xu »

I've been looking for a creative project for a long time now (I'm a Commercial photographer and retoucher), I may have found it. Let me know what you think.

I have recently been through the process of deciding whether to get into distilling, and then researching builds etc. During this I realised there isnt a current youtube channel dedicated to distillation.

I have never distilled a drop, but I do know beer brewing pretty well. The idea is to create a channel that operates around two-way discussion with communities such as this. In a way to document the process of learning (as I learn). And archive that for other people to follow along with. People can learn things they did not know, and offer knowledge that they do.

When able and appropriate I would like to bring in experts. For mash / fermentation / distillation / recipe formation / aging of course, but also for things like tastings and flaw detection etc.
Other than that I would be extremely open to anything that the community would like to see, and be involved in.

These sorts of things only work with pretty brutal honesty and openness so I thought I would put it out there and see what you thought. Happy to answer any questions.

Just released this video. It is a overview of the entire process.

The idea is to give people that are totally new to distilling a bit of a orientation. Its pretty tricky to even know what people are talking about if you dont have a basic understanding of what you need to do to make a bottle of spirits.

This is the last of the "old" content that I recorded a long time ago. So all of the kick ass input / sugestions / crit that you have been fgiving will start coming into effect in folowing weeks :)

This weeks video is now out.

Taken some advice and gone back to more basic and specifically distilling content. A discussion on boilers.

Just quietly this video was very rushed, let me know if it shows :(

This one is pretty light hearted.
But I wonder if I could turn it into something. I would love to be able to do 2 videos a week. But that's a WHOLE lotta time. Wondering if I could do "extra videos" perhaps 2 a month. Short 1-2min videos that define/explain keywords in distilling.
Basically, build up a dictionary.
Thoughts?

A quick discussion about 5 cool things that could happen if distilling were legalised in the USA.

And one of the best ways for you to help it happen.

New video went live today!

This time I'm giving a update on my build, and asking for a little advice. I also address a bit of the advice / feedback I have received (a good chunk of it from this thread!) and discuss how I plan on using that to improve :)

Hi all,

So finally. . . . . a video where I do something other than stand in front of a black screen and just talk!

Brewing a best bitter to fill my empty kegs, and talking about what brewing "knowledge" helps transition to distilling and what needs to be forgotten.

I thought this may be a good example of what distilling videos could look like later on so let me know what you think :)

Copper hunting and discussing pot still vs boka stills.

And perhaps looking at going CCVM too.

So I took a jump into brazing.

It's not pretty that's for sure, but it was fun as shit. Im guessing there are lots of people around here that can set me straight on the mistakes I made. And probably a few people that have been wondering what does this for the first time would be like.

Just in case you didn't notice I have been putting off the shotgun build. It made me a little nervous!

Time to give it a crack though.

Cleaning run done! Finally get to move onto actually making something drinkable :)

Can't wait! Thanks again to everyone. There is no way I would have been able to get things going without all the help from here :) Respect.

BDF wrote:Some nice wood you got a hold of, but you're gonna find it's not gonna sate your needs pretty quick. Put down 6-7 one-pint jars on oak, and you'll learn that 6 months to a year of aging will leave you wanting more oak sticks for aging while previous batches are still ongoing. Each of those sticks looks to be about the size recommended by many for a qty of one each for pint-size jars of spirit.

There are many threads on oak aging, but this one in particular worked well for me: http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... n#p7076067

THanks man! Will need to check that thread out in full! And yeah I will be looking for a source for "raw" wood still. Just nice to have a little of everything to experiment with ASAP.

May put a little of this on some wood too ;)
