higher power of optimal reflux power

Post by yupiteru »

what happens if you input more power than optimal power into reflux mode,
here I mean the quality of the distillate,
worse?

Yep, smearing fractions. Taste, smell, feel is your guide. Higher proof in the boiler will increase input speed too.

Some members recommend to use a wattage close to the maximum before flooding. Some only use 50% of that... You have to find out yourself. You run a 2" boka, right? 2.5kW will be the maximum perhaps, depends on packing material. Something "normal" is 2kW or a bit less.

The same thing that happens if you do anything other than optimal.....it all goes down hill from there .

OK thanks for the answers,
therefore, more power than necessary in reflux mode means only problems, and no improvement,

Look up the difference in meanings between "Optimal" and "Necessary" !

Pehaps you need to clarify your thinking here ?

"Necessary" being the operative word.
Remember, in some instances you need to push a bit harder (if your RC can handle) to create the vapor needed to create the reflux needed to create the higher abv.
More power = More vapor/ More vapor = More reflux / More reflux = More abv.
We have seen examples of operators not running their bok hard enough, and as a result would have a lower than expected purity.

Try to make your still do as many tricks as possible so that you'll know for sure where the optimal operating range lyes.

Definitely a balancing act. Too fast and you push tails all the way up, too slow and output rate is really slow. I like to operate in a vapor speed of 15-20 fps. Faster seems to lead to too much smearing.

If you read some of odins posts he suggests vapor speed is quite important to flavor profile. Learn what works for your rig.

you're right,
entering more power is a useless harmful dangerous thing (if you have the LPG as source of heat),
more power = boiling noise that moves up the column, (probabimente flooded column),
 ABV "inexplicably" low,
and in a few seconds everything comes out from above and goes down towards the flame
this is a real danger, it was lucky, I was very close to the distiller, and as soon as I saw "throw up" I immediately turned off the LPG
