Oh for the love of God...

Re: Oh for the love of God...
I dropped my mini still head yesterday. Copper soldered to SS. I knew it would break if I ever dropped it and had been being very careful, but yeah, I dropped it, stone cold sober, and broke the solder joint.
Re: Oh for the love of God...
Condolences. That's a hell of a hit to break a solder joint. I'd have thought the copper would bend first.

Or maybe, as Conor McGregor says: "Fook"!

Re: Oh for the love of God...
Last week immediately broke my first one while unpacking it, then today my replacement arrived broken. Ordered number three, fingers crossed it lasts more than a minute in my hands. Lol
Re: Oh for the love of God...
I had my first one last 15+ years. It came in a heavy paper "box". Well one day I plopped it back in its original box and it kept on falling past the end of the box right to my feet. Since then I break about one per year. They don't make them like they used to, but at least now they use plastic containers to hold them. When I place an online order for parts, yeast, etc. I usually always add an affordable Alcholmeter and Hydrometer. I have like three spares of each lying around. It's just a part of the game, no matter how careful you are. It's not a matter of if, but when!

Re: Oh for the love of God...
I had the same one for years, it survived all kinds of things including being in the big heavy test cylinder when the cat knocked it on the floor. The cylinder broke the alcometer didn't. Then I went through 4 cylinders in a matter of weeks, still didn't break the hydrometer. I don't remember what eventually broke the alcometers but once it did I ran through 3 in a short time. Right now I have 3 on hand at the same time so I haven't broken any of them.

After a couple of failed repairs, it is back together, cleaned, and ready for my next gin runNZChris wrote:I dropped my mini still head yesterday. Copper soldered to SS. Re: Oh for the love of God...
I go through spells of breaking them. I'll have one for a while then break 1-3 over a couple months. I buy in sets, always have a spare. It doesn't help they're made from super-thin glass. I typically break them in the cylinder. I tip it up too fast, the hydrometer drops too fast and it breaks. It really doesn't take much! Mine are Made in USA and are $6. I like the fact that my carelessness is helping keeping someone employed, at least that's how I justify it.
Re: Oh for the love of God...
Well it had to happen first in 9 years and the only proof and tralle hydrometer I have.

Just knocked on wood as I’ve gone 10 years now but probably wouldn’t hurt to have a backup!

Re: Oh for the love of God...
It's that test cylinder you have there that caused that. I went through 4 of those cylinders in a week once before I found a good heavy pyrex one in amazon. I still have one of those with the green plastic foot but only because I duct taped it on.acfixer69 wrote:Well it had to happen first in 9 years and the only proof and tralle hydrometer I have.
