Hey all,

Found this at a local health food shop online. Do you think it could replace LME as a base malt? Seems cheap enough for small batches through the air still and apparently is a pure barley malt extract.

Could it replace LME - Yes, it is essentially a concentrated wort
Is it a substitute for a base malt in a mash - No, it cannot provide enzymatic conversion of starches

Thanks TIO.

Had already seen that. £7.45 it's showing as, plus postage, so the 454g jars would work out cheaper as I can just walk in and buy them with no postage costs. Glad to know it will work

Thanks Greggn. I know it wont have any enzymatic properties, but I'll be using Angel yellow label yeast anyway, which reportedly does a good job of converting starches to fermentable sugars as well as fermenting them

In a supermarket in Edinburgh I once saw bourbon biscuits (Nothing to do with the whisky. It's a chocolate biscuit with a chocolate cream filling) where the 400g packet cost slightly less than then 200g one. Wasn't even a special offer.

What amazed me was that people were still buying the 200g packets!

We do tend to have offers here when you buy multiple items. Happens on Ebay a lot as well.

Can't believe you think that's oddly British TIO. LOL

Can totally believe that about the bourbon creams though Normandie. Seen that loads of times in shops here

is that not oddly

..

first price excluding VAT 20% the next price with VAT then without VAT and finally the VAT does get added again… a fucking circus.

...oddly and that is why I quit the ‘Home Counties’ in 1978 when the standard rate of VAT was 8%

Sometimes it can be a bit of a pain in the arse here. Cost of living has skyrocketed and my Energy bill has almost doubled after last month's price rise. Fucking shocking. Anyway, on a more positive note, Just fired a rum wash together. Eager to see how it turns out. Only done a 13l wash so will be doing 3 stripping runs and a spirit run in the air still.

Black treacle (UK version of molasses) and demerara sugar. Starting gravity of 1.080, so should hopefully ferment to about 10 or 11%. Will report the results next week
