Is HDPE containers ok to store the foreshots? I want to use them for either my camping stove or as cleaner!

You should really use glass

Fine. I had some leftover HDPE vinegar containers when I started this hobby (cleaning runs) and I've stored most of my fores in one of them for the last 5+ years.

Don't use it if you plan to re-use the fores for cleaning the still again though. Most of my mixed fores have got rum and gin and peat everything else in them and smell all sorts of crazy, so I keep some clean fores in glass for when I want to clean out my copper condenser etc.

I just reuse plastic jugs to store foreshots, usually from another cleaning product and clearly mark it. I keep them out in the shed just in case one leaks but HDPE or PET don't seem to suffer. Not had one fail me yet. My glass is to valuable to me for the good stuff.

+1 to what Salty said. Alternatively you could consider a 1 gallon red gasoline jerry can, which is what I use. Two edge sword, people won't accidentally drink it, but might put it in your car fuel tank lol Mine is suitably labeled.

We really discourage the use of plastic with high abv alcohol or in the vapor path. Read rule #8. You should be able to get used glass containers for free.

Bushman, we are discussing a place to park FORESHOTS until they get used as fire starter, ant killer or whatever. I'm very aware of rule #8. I was not aware it applied to even the wastes of distillation, i.e. something nobody is going to consume. I mistakenly said feints, now that I'm quoted my error will remain in perpetuity.

Storing fore shots in glass is as dangerous as storing gasoline in glass... for obvious reasons.

Expired Fire extinguishers are cheap or free, Generally here in OZ they are stainless (purge welded to meet our "nanny state" standards - we get the odd win with those) but might have some brass on top, have seen normal steel ones occasionally

Kegs with a end cap n triclamp work well for storage and are generally cheaper per litre than glass

I guess I wouldn't have any issue with using plastic for foreshots, it's only going to get used for fuel or sanitizer anyway, and sanitizer comes in similar PET or HDPE containers.

That said i store mine in gallon sized glass jugs, with a big poison and skull with crossbones on it.

staying away from plastic is just a good practice.

I store mine in a windshield washer fluid jug, along with methanol for camp stoves.

The methanol comes from leftovers at work.

update; this thread prompted me to check on my stash of automotive grade

methanol, a case of 24 - 10 oz. unopened plastic bottles with seals intact,

not a single one has more than 6 oz. left in them. bottom line is that the

angels are stealing methanol from sealed factory original plastic containers.

tomorrow it all go's into steel containers. lost close to half.

My foreshots are lower abv than what I'm aging in glass and much lower abv than the azeo I store in glass.
