‘Fresh Wash’ into Low Wines question.

Post by Mattmmmax »

Following the Hook Rum from tried and true and read through many many threads and can’t for the life of me figure out if ‘fresh wash’ is fermented or unfermented when they call for adding it into the spirit run for extra flavor. Help appreciated.

So try some with and some without and see for yourself. Your palette will be different than other people here so going by what they say may not be right for you. So many are afraid to experiment a little for fear of making a mistake.

As a general rule it would be fermented wash. You don't want unfermented sugars in your boiler as they tend to increase the possibility of a puke (foaming that extends through the still to get into your distillate).

Thanks Zed. That’s what I had assumed and had set aside some wash already.

I’m def going to be experimenting with a few things with this rum but mostly on the aging side of things. Going for something full flavored. Have some buccaneer bobs dark rum essence ready to go. Some new and used toasted American oak and have seen variously using dates, a pineapple slice, etc.

We’ll see how it goes!

unfermented would be a waste in my opinion

It definitely means fresh fermented wash.......or in other words a mix of wash and low wines.

Thanks again all - added about a gal of fresh fermented! Wash into my low wines this morning, needed a bit of extra water to get it just about 40%. Still is chugging away now with about a 5gal charge from 3 stripping runs.

This is my first rum spirit run after focusing on UJSSM as a beginner. This rum smells amazing coming off the spout!
