I made an all-grain enzyme corn mash. After I put in the SEBamyl and waited an hour or so, I took a hydrometer reading. It came up about 1.052, corrected for temp. So that's about 7% ABV. The wash tasted sweet. Fermented for a week down to 0.998 and I took a proofing hydrometer reading. It's indicating about 4% ABV.
What happened to my alcohol?

Re: Lying Hydrometer
Did you run the wash and get the alcohol out? Otherwise a proofing hydrometer will do you no good.

A proofing hydrometer is no good if there are any solids in the wash. Only use the (OG-FG)*131.25 to calculate ABV. Save the proofing hydrometer for the resultant spirit out of the still.
Re: Lying Hydrometer
OK, finally got to mixing the low wines and measuring the proof. Turns out the wash ended up at a little over 8% ABV.
I think that's fantastic conversion for all grain.

That's a good turnout.
