any reason not to use this for a column

I have a guy who can weld the ferule ends on for me. Or I did see that thread where they used 4 ga copper wire to solder up the flanges

Re: any reason not to use this for a column
I used a similar column in the past so I don't see problems ...

Looks like a good length for a reflux, price is good, forgot to check thickness. If your good working with stainless I also see no problem.

so if I can't get someone to weld the ferrules on could I use a copper coupler and silver solder and braze it on?

Sure could . My preference would be to just solder it with lead free solder . I’ve done dozens of ferrules that way .
Some think unless you weld or braze a still , it won’t be strong enough . Lead free solder is absolutely string enough and the lower heat required doesn’t “cook” your stainless .

My recommended goto .

so I could possibly do a butt seam and then just solder it together with no coupling?Yummyrum wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 3:05 pm Sure could . My preference would be to just solder it with lead free solder . I’ve done dozens of ferrules that way .

No , thats the limitation . Soft solder is not going to be strong enough for a butt joint ….. but it certainly is when using capillary joints .
My recommended goto .

I would never use a butt join on a still for any reason what ever the solder used. Use proper collars or joiners.

well, I got a good friend's co-worker to weld the ends on, they look awesome , did a nice job. made a trade to pay which is always nice.
so now I have a 2.5" x 48" stainless steel spool for a total cost of $42 plus a pint lol not bad I was looking at a lot more to buy a premade one!
