hot water heating elements
It's been a while since I fired up my still and just plugged her in to do some cleaning (my new model is finished, so excited!) and my elements seem to not be as "energetic" as before. I am basing this purely on sound though. They used to roar a little like n electric kettle, not they barely make a sound... Any reason hot water elements would degrade with time?? Will they get their oomph back, or should I replace them?

For the record: it's been over a year since I fired it up and there are 2 elements. A 3kw and a 1.5 kw both are hooked up to 120 though, not 240.

@ mikeac,
If you are powering your 3000watts and 1500watts elements with 120volts you are only getting 750watts and 375watts from these elements.

I don't think sound is a good determining factor here. Mine sounds different with different washes. Different amounts. The supply power coming to the house could be higher or lower. Cleaner dirtier. Bla Bla Bla. To many things can cause different sounds. Heat up time would be a better indicator. Or run progress.

@ coaster: did the calc years ago. couldn't remember the numbers, just that it worked.
@Prairiepiss: Yeah, I was just running water through as a first cleaning run. I think that was the difference. I've got a 1st gen UJSM going now as a second cleaning run and it sounds better
Going to use the back set from my cleaning run to kick off my second gen! A few more days and I'll start a rum so I can age the dunder. Man I missed this hobby!

Re: hot water heating elements
mikeac, are you running a 240V 1500W element or is it a 120V 1500W element...??? I don't recall 240V 1500W elements as being readily available, if at all... I'd assume that you are running a 120V 1500W element and a 3000W 240V element on 120V which is providing 750W for a total of 2250W... Hopefully you are running those on two separate 120V circuits so as not to overload a single circuit...
As Prairiepiss stated, different washes will sound different when heated... The only real way to check this is to either wait to see how long it takes to come up to temperature and perhaps to use a voltmeter to check the voltage reading between the terminals on each element...
Keep us posted on your findings...

Re: hot water heating elements
Both are definitely 240 elements. It's been too long since I ran and I can't remember what the normal heat up time was. I could grab a DMM I suppose and check the resistance. That'd settle my nervousness once and for all.
I have another random question though: I tried to make the everlasting gaskets and the cardboard in every single one got wet and one even started leaking. I had a whole roll on most of them too. I went back and took a careful look at the directions and my materials and I noticed the "tape" I bought was teflon... Would this make the difference? I looked at the pictures on the forum and thought I new what to use, but the post says PTFE tape. Are there two products that look almost identical, but one sucks??
I guess while I'm logged in: Has anyone attempted to flange a 1" piece of copper? The clamp is for a 1.5" pipe, which is standard, and I made some flanges, I just don't think they are amazing...

Maybe I just remember the roar, and forget the dull sound of stripping... Maybe I should start taking notes??

teflon tape doesn't exist...
Sh!t. Any ideas why my gaskets didn't work then...
