Years ago corlene convinced me to making a copper spacer and wrapping it with ptfe tape for where my boiler connects to my column pot (see pic, white part is the seal). I recently needed to do some re-wrapping and I discovered 3/4 inch teflon tape....much more better than 1/2 "!!! Just a tip for those of you who use the same arrangement.

It all depends on the diameter of the gasket you want to make.. anything below 7", 1/2" works best..
As for my 10" mat board gasket, I still prefer using 1/2" tape, as it provide a tighter cross-latch, and is somewhat easier to handle over the 3/4", those it will take a bit longer to wrap..
Just my preference..
