Re: New rig
I do grappa once a year using a Charantaise set up with a preheater the same size as the main boiler. It's plumbed so that dumping and recharging is over in a few minutes and it starts distilling within minutes of putting the heat back on. Three or four strips in a day is a doddle.

Re: New rig
Those are not cheap, you made it yourself or bought it ? That would make a pretty nice alternative indeed.
Re: New rig
Maybe I could update my current setup to a charentais style still !!! WOW now I cant stop think about that idea haha
Re: New rig
Built from scrapyards with help from friends. Cost bugger all.
Re: New rig
Could you post pictures so it will inspire me? Any recommanded readings, tips?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
Re: New rig
There's no point in posting pics of mine because it's not built from easily obtainable vessels. I pinched the idea from ancient books that are now online.

It's been thirty years, JB . plus I'm a couple of hundred miles from my computers. There's a fairly recent thread here from when someone was looking at building one. A search should find it.

Re: New rig
As a(recheck engineering) experiment I used a copper worm type mash chiller inline with my condenser outlet and put it in a bucket of mash. It got warm
Crazy,huh...Lol. now to find a better way to use it. Maybe a fifteen gallon blue drum with tap, elevated... back to the drawing board.

Re: New rig
I suggest you don't do that - If you read "That thread" NZC can get the pre-heater distilling towards the end of a run - Wouldn't want those sorts of temperatures in plastic myself !jb-texshine wrote:As a(recheck engineering) experiment I used a copper worm type mash chiller inline with my condenser outlet and put it in a bucket of mash. Re: New rig
I sometimes use the hot water off the jacket of the condenser for making up another wash or generation. The last run I did was on a wood burner in the boondocks and the waste water was hot enough to wash the dishes

Just aimed for 120°f. There's another thought, preheat mash water.Pikey wrote:I suggest you don't do that - If you read "That thread" NZC can get the pre-heater distilling towards the end of a run - Wouldn't want those sorts of temperatures in plastic myself !jb-texshine wrote:As a(redneck engineering) experiment I used a copper worm type mash chiller inline with my condenser outlet and put it in a bucket of mash.
