Can copper look like this? Golden colour?

Post by Asos21 »

So I've just bought some 15mm copper pipe, 15mm copper tank connector and 3 X 15mm copper elbow fittings.

Or at least they was sold as copper. These fittings where purchased from a large global plumbing supplier who is extremely reputable. So I find it hard to believe that they would sell me coppe fittings which aren't actually copper!

But they seriously don't look like copper! They are like a golden colour and they resemble the exact appearance of brass fittings.

Can copper fittings look like this?

Also if they are brass then how can I be sure they are safe for use? They are manufactured in the UK to EN1254-2 standard. If they are brass then do I need to treat them in any way to clean them?

Image is a comparison of the fitting next to a copper pipe.

That fitting looks like brass, not so sure about the pipe.

The European spec is for brass fittings to be used with copper piping. So, that’s about as good of answer you’ll get from “this side of the pond”.

They are sold as fittings FOR copper. Unfortunately for us, there exists very little need for such fittings in copper in the regular industrial world, so no doubt they are brass.

Euro standards allow for lead in brass, with some items passing standards testing containing as much as 3.5%. Without asking the manufacturer of that exact fitting you have no idea.

You can futz around and tin them with lead feee solder, or go and source the same fittings in stainless steel. Depending on the intended use of said fitting - looks like there is an olive (bushing) inside the fitting, these are usually a plastic of some sort, a copper version should be available. The "tank" side gets tricky too, avoiding that silicone seal...

Hence why many just soft solder the (ss) fittings in
