Great OD, even that I see that second option as the better one.
But we have to research by doing and I'm sure that this would be a good solution for your 4"er.

Re: New still build on the way
your down comers look narrow to me. Bubbles can mess with their performance. What output and reflux ratio are you looking for ?
Re: New still build on the way
Latest progress on the build
OD
The plate assembly fitted, the 1/4" tube was flattened on the end, which spreads it larger than 1/4", it was then drilled with 1/4" hole, and another piece of 1/4" tube pushed through the 4" wall to suspend the plate assembly, this can be used as a blind thermometer port.
The sight glass hardware now soldered into the column ( without glass ) , the column will need a major clean to get rid of any marks incured during the fabrication.OD

Re: New still build on the way
Wow, that looks soooo good OD.
Looking at the plates I would have used more but smaller holes but maybe looking at it in personal it'll be different.
At the end you can watch the performance in the sight glasses.

Those holes are 1/8" which I understood to be correct for a perforated plate.rednose wrote:Looking at the plates I would have used more but smaller holes

Size of the holes in the plates vs. the number of holes? Input vs. downcomer diameter?
The list goes on.
Can you do the math Manu?

Re: New still build on the way
Okay here is the latest, I built the dephlagmater with a drip ring in the head, I must admit this was the hardest part of the build so far.
OD
I attached the drip ring by tacking it with hard silver solder, I had run out of soft solder so I collected all of the droppings of solder and placed the around the ring and hit them with the torch, not the prettiest joint, but it achieved what i wanted
This is the dephlagmater with the product takeoff attached.
Here is the column with the dephlagmater in position, not finally soldered yet, as a major cleanup is required on all parts which will be easier if I do this before the final solder joint.OD

Re: New still build on the way
Yep, the dephlamator is a little fuzzy to built and you did it in copper what is easy to form.
What you gonna use as the condenser?
I'll use a shotgun as it's small and effective in my "caña" retifier column.

Re: New still build on the way
Does the dephlag slip into the column for the solder joint or will that be a butt joint?
EDit
Never mind. I see the thing better after clicking on.

Re: New still build on the way
Actually copper is more difficult to work with, as the heat transfer when making joints can de-solder nearby joints, which is why I tacken the drip ring with hard solder before completing the joint with soft solder. I did not want it to drop off inside the top plate chamber when I attach the dephlagmater to the column.rednose wrote:Yep, the dephlamator is a little fuzzy to built and you did it in copper what is easy to form.
Any suggestions for a name for this beast.

Looks a bit like a clarinet or some sorta musical instrument. What glass are you going to use? Cheers, bd.

Hi OD,
Just curious, will you get enough light through those ports to actually see inside the column ?
Can't think of a name for your elegant creation, although I see an elephant's trunk.

the overkill column? (I say overkill with the most profound respect btw).
I have to ask. is it my eyes or are the sight glasses out line? Are you going to do a detailed how-to on the sight glasses?

[offtopic]
It's a sunny afternoon here larry, and I'm having some nice UJSM variant (50 corn 20 malt 20 rye 10 wheat) that's just come out of my 50l carboy. it's about a year old on charred wine barrels. I had a sample a few months back and though "shit, overoaked." it was pure campfire, but the last couple of months have really helped the vanilla and caramal shine though. Next time I'll cut the rye and up the wheat. Glad I like it because I have about three years worth of drinking and giving to go before it's gone .LWTCS wrote:Thats crazy talk Kiwikiwistiller wrote:the overkill column?
