New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
Well I know you all love pics, so here goes.
3/8 stainless rod, 3/8 down comers.
Top 3 plates have 1/8 holes, bottom 2 plates have the next size down due to many broken drill bits.
The cups for the down comers are 1 inch.
The plates are 3mm thick.
More pics to come once I start gluing the dephlag together tomorrow.
Cheers.

Getting the nuts on the rod is a PITA, so I just used my cordless drill on the rod and a spanner on the nut

It aint shiny yet but getting 4" SS ferules to stick to copper with mapp gas is fucked, used 15% silver solder and reckon it wont leak, 4" ferule was tig welded to keg.
Deplhlag is sorted just needs soldering together, and the condenser just needs a couple of 3" caps.
Can almost smell the sweet scent of a cleaning run coming on.

Really does look good Austin.
I'm curious to know how the 4" connection will make your column behave compared to the 2 inchers the other gents are using?
The organization looks good in your shop too. Hate you too!

Are you going to put bands around the plates if you don't your down comings are just going to go down the walls of you pipe.

It will run down the walls regardless of what he does.
The reflux will be higher than the wall loss.
So no real big deal.
Kinda like a few extra holes in the plates.
Reflux running down the walls is reflux all the same and as long as the outcome works... Oh well

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
You can cut a piece of solder that will just fit around the inside wall of the column, brush on some flux, heat from the outside. when it get hot enough the solder will seal the plate to the wall... No leak by.. but it appears your making this one with removable plates. If you not a good option.still crazy wrote:Azframer wrote:Are you going to put bands around the plates if you don't your down comings are just going to go down the walls of you pipe.

Austin, That is brilliant! That's how I see mine when I close my eyes. I'm with Larry, hate you too No kidding about the broken drill bits, huh? Glad things are going well all around, and yes your back yard is awesome!

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
I dont think a bit of reflux running down the walls will be much of a problem, the discs were cut with a water jet cutter to the exact size of the ID of the pipe and they are very tight to get in........
Using mapp gas on 4" is really pushing it, I bought the best torch I could find though.
Yeah the drill bits breaking was a pain, and with a 100km round trip to get another one I just went with 1/8 (the next size up) so now the bottom 2 plates have 7/64 holes and the top 3 plates have 1/8.
Going to have a crack at soldering the dephlag today, this is going to be tricky trying to solder joins so close together, but I've got 3 different grades of silver solder so should be right.
edit: The plates will be removable so I can take some out or add others, or even remove them and use as a pot for stripping runs if I want too.
Cheers.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
Got the dephlag done, man that was a challenge.
I'm not overly happy with it but it will do the job and does not leak, all those joins so close together was a prick.... adding heat and everything moves
I put it away to regain my composure for a while and cranked my other still into action, cracked a bottle of UJSM and am feeling much better now
These things are not easy to build for a novice, the cost and inexperience is a bit daunting at times, starting to think I should have waited a while to build this thing.
Cheers.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
Did you make the "Standard" dephlagmater or had you made any modifications, It should not be too hard to assemble if it's he standard type.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
I think mine is different to yours, I went for a version rednose posted in your build.
The problem I had was getting the couplings to stay put when heating them, they were pretty loose and would not stay put.
The one that looks ugly is done with soft solder so it should be easy to fix, that soft solder is shit! I've only ever used the sticks of hard silver solder and will stick to that I think
I will try to find the version of the dephlag I did, it's the one in your topic that has a 4x3 and a 3x2 reducer for the inner core.
Cheers.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
I have changed the design of dephlagmaters now, I use a 4-2"reducer top and bottom but with the bottom one having the 2" reduction at the bottom with the 2"pipe running through it, this creates its own drip ring, and removes the need for a separate drip ring to be soldered in.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
ok that sounds easy compared to what I done.
The one I made is like this http://homedistiller.org/forum/download ... &mode=view
It's 12" long all up and should work ok.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
That looks good OD, a lot easier than what I've done..... but I'm glad I went the way I did, it will give all of us something to compare notes with if we tweak things here and there on these rigs.
It will be interesting to see how my thick plates perform against the thinner ones most are using, my thinking of using thicker plates is the holes are longer and perhaps could afford a larger size.... maybe I'm wrong, we'll see eventually.
Cheers.

Lookin' good Austin. I'm liking the fermenters in the background, anyone know of a source here in the states?

you could try one of these, and just add a plastic spigot for a few bucks.mtnmann wrote:Lookin' good Austin. I'm liking the fermenters in the background, anyone know of a source here in the states?

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
Ok well I've gone and almost finished making a shotgun product condenser, it's about 10" long with seven 3/8" tubes inside a 2" housing, it still needs plumbing and a polish.
Anyone think this wont be efficient enough for my flute?
I think it should be but I thought I'd run it past you lot first, if not it will be a good pre-condenser for my other project.
Cheers.

Nice shotgun! You came up with the same thought I was kickin around in my head. To go straight out of the 2 in 90 in to the shotgun. I like it! It looks good.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
i dig it also. i was figgering i'd just use the vapor shredder from my pot/3"T for mine, but i might end up getting some 2.5" pipe that i could use for a similar sitchy. a 3" graham condenser hanging off of 1" pipe looks a little wobbly to me. i like BEEFY.

Re: New Flute, different ideas.... my version.
The main reason I use the 1" is for removal for storing / shipping. I think a 2" ferrule and triclamp would be the hot ticket.. but then you driving up the price for parts again.
We all know that is not an issue for condensifactor he ownes the company that makes the ferrules and tri clamps I am pretty sure...

...2" clamp $6.37 http://www.gvc.net/p/247/wing-nut-with-hole-clamps
...2- 2" short ferrules $3.27 each....6.54. http://www.gvc.net/p/238/short-butt-weld-ferrules
total of $12.91 for a complete 2" tri-clamp setup....how much you paying for a 1" union? can't be that big of a price difference? i think most of your customers who are considering buying such an awesome piece of hillbilly technology would cough up and extra few clams for the shotty?
