boiler~plates~packed

Post by googe »

Hey all, I'm going to start this build I've been wanting to do a.long time. Will be slow and tiresome but there's lots to.do and think.about!!. will be vapor feed from boiler to bottom of each column via a tee and two valves. Boiler will have a pressure relief valve also. Three plates on first column, lava packed second column and a 2' shotgun. Will post pics as I go. Wish me luck, going to be a mind fuck  .

If the vapor enters through the top, what the hell goes on below the slant plate...??? Why not reduce and collect off the bottom rather than wasting perfectly good copper doing nothing below the plate...??? Or am I missing something here...???

all columns will be fixed to a bench, free standing to a degree. The feed tubes are not large enough to support the column sizes. And it's my copper so I'll waist it how ever much I like.

Just did a clean run, found and fixed 5 leaks, nightmare!. Just running it on the keg for the clean, will do the same with the packed section.

Looking good. Just think, you will finish it up, it will work great but then your mind will start to wander on how you can tweak it or start planning a completely new build. It's a viscous circle!

Update!, have done cleaning runs and sac run on plated column with drain installed, ran great, very happy with it. Have got 98% of soldering done now on both columns and fittings etc, will do clean runs and sac run through the week than a proper rum run Friday, and maybe a neutral. When I've tested everything I'll give it a good polish.

nice work googe. I'm trying to wrap my head around your design. It looks like you decided not to use that second valve on the plated section( i realise its not recommended to be able to completely close off the vapour path, but you mentioned a pressure reflief valve on the boiler).

Is the intention to be able to use either the plates OR the packed? Or to use them both at the same time?

As it looks to me, you can disable the packed section, but not the plated... Am I missing something?

What's your plan on how your going to drive the rig?
