I'm guessing level plates is more of an issue with perfs , that said bath locked down comers would be more of a problem than cup or U vapor locks with and unlevel bath, mine is pretty tolerant

Re: 6" column build
Top job hypno.
Hopfully this comes across as constructive critisism , but wondering if you can squeeze a few more tubes in that PC shell between the ones you have . .... or drill them out and use larger diameter tubes .
Its just a massive shell and seems a waste of space . More tubes would make it way more efficient and responsive and much less weight .
Just guessing but I would estimate from the pic that the hole area is barely 10-15% of the area on the 4” . That will mean the vapour speed in those pipes will be very high .
Also its relatively short in comparision to the overall still which being 6” will need a lot of cooling especially if you are going to use it for stripping .
Edit : Just doing the math , if it’s 6x 3/4” tubes in a 4” shell, thats about 5% area .... quite deceiving to look at

Re: 6" column build
Yummy,
So, if my math is correct these are 1/2" tubes x6. Surface area for 1/2" dimeter circle is .196"x6=1.176". Surface area of 4" = 12.47. So that would make the holes take up 1.176" out of 12.47" or 1.176/12.47= 9.43% of the total area of the 4" shotgun condenser. The length of the shotgun is 9" long. 9"x4" will hold a volumes of 113.1cu in. or .4896USG. The tubes would be a little less than about 11 Cu in. or .0478 USG for the same length or so. Well... Im not sure you may be right in not enough the stop the velocity of the vapors. But that can be compensated by either more tubes or by the temp of the cooling water and it's velocity as well...

Re: 6" column build
Yummy,
I'm ok with some criticism or questions. Would you agree that it should be ok then? I started to get nervous on my build when I read your first post. To be fair and honest since my build was based off of a lot of the experience I had while working the HB flute, and what I knew worked, for the final condenser, I did kind of just "eyeball" it to see what "looked" right. I do know that on the HB flute that the final condenser was only about 4" long and I think a 3" shell, so I kind of figured for 4" just double it and it should be fine. I do appreciate your questions and ensuring that it will be functional

Re: 6" column build
Probably it will be just fine while runing in flute mode .
I guess I am thinking that once you cut off the deflag and run in stripping mode that it may be a limiting factor .
I hope not and again it maybe just fine and I’m un-necessarily making you panic . Maybe you don’t even run like that .... I don’t , but many do .
It just seems like there is too much water area to Vapour area for me .
The worst case is you just turn the power down .

Ah now I understand your angle... so for the time being I am not going to be stripping with the column. If I ever decide to do that I’ll probably invest in an onion head/helmet for stripping with. I appreciate the concern but since I’ll be making whiskey with a column and distilling on the grain, with my boiler that’s likely where I’ll be focusing most of the work for this column.

All of but the water inline is complete. Test run whenever the boiler is delivered.

This is beautiful. I wish I could find 6in copper around here. Can't find it anywhere.

In the last picture, with the shoes and clothes on the floor...... looks like the wife thought it was a stripper pole. Did you set her straight?

Last couple comments I am loving this thread and I think the work you've done is unbelievable, keep posting as it is finished and broken in!

I have a copper fire extinguisher shell to use as a helmet.hypnopooper wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2020 7:33 am Ah now I understand your angle... so for the time being I am not going to be stripping with the column. I am removing the brass fittings and replacing with copper ferrules to go with the rest of the still.

Got copper fire extinguisher I was going to make a stripper too. Little bigger than 6" but for a helmet will look cool I'm going to leave the badges on. No lead I checked.

Love the 6x4 bowl reducer for the top. I came up with the same idea for mine. Reducers are sitting on the bench waiting for me get building.

Re: 6" column build
The 180 bend pipe is 3”, which makes the bowl reducer 6x3 on the column and 4x3 on the condenser side. I’ve got a jacketet copper kettle with agitator I ordered from distillex store on AliExpress that should arrive in a week or 2, depending on freight delivery.

I’ve also got enough 4” pipe to build a gin basket eventually, but honestly in all the time I had a DSP, I never ran a gin basket so not sure when that will get built.

I used ProtectaClear by Everbrite Coatings to apply a protective clear coat to all of the outside copper in order to keep the parts nice and shiny after polishing.

Re: 6" column build
Got my boiler delivered today from Distillex on AliExpress. A word of caution on the delivery times, be very patient. I ordered over Thanksgiving week, and it was finally delivered today. Additionally communication was sometimes not very good. However, the quality looks to be pretty decent, I'm not disappointed in what was delivered. It will be a electric powered bain marie boiler. I had to tweak the parrot a bit but initial assembly looks good. I won't be able to run it for a couple of weeks due to other commitments
