Copper turned black in vinegar

Post by crazyk78 »

Hey all,

the most unusual thing happened.

I was tinkering on the weekend and decided to make up a boka head out of copper. I also have a SS triclover flange on the bottom to join with my column and I soldered a brass airline fitting on the output tube.

I soldered it all up and it looked pretty neat.

That night I put submerged the unit in vinegar (SS flange and output threaded fitting included) just to find it went all black in the morning. When I rub my finger on it it rubs off but it doesn't completely clean.

What the hell is going on? Will it be ok to use?

Also on a side note, can you use caustic soda to clean copper?
