Do "blackwoods" trade in NZ? I had trouble here in oz until I found them.

You should be able to get them from plumbing stores.

Me too. So I went looking. Hose bibbs have a threaded outlet to allow a hose to be connected. Taps (mostly) do not. But then taps aren't taps, they're faucets (at least in US). Taps are different thing(s) altogether.

Taps are the name given to the metal plates on the soles of special dance shoes called "Tap shoes". They're used by vaudeville dancers to make sounds in tune to the music.

"Taps" ("Butterfield's Lullaby"), sometimes known by the lyrics of its second verse, "Day is Done," is a famous musical piece, played in the U.S. military during flag ceremonies and funerals, generally on bugle or trumpet. The tune is also used at night to signal "lights out."

Taps are also a cutting tool for cutting an internal thread in a suitable sized hole. Its mate is called a die, which cuts a thread externally on a rod.

However a die is also a cube with numbered sides 1 to 6, used in games of chance. Two of them together are called dice.

Die is also what you do when you've had enough of this life.

Totally confused? Me too. Ain't the English language a strange animal?

So endeth today's trivia lesson. ;-)

.
Slainte!

A 'bib' is one of those things they put under a baby's input hole to catch spillage.

'Hose' are socks which go all the way up - eg pantihose.

I'll leave you to put them together - only the yanks would use the term for a 'tap'.

Since needle valves are made of brass (copper/zinc), is there anything that needs to be done to them initially, to make them "less" toxic? I believe people comment strongly about using zinc anywhere in the distillation "path".

I soaked brass fittings in a solution of 2/3 vinegar and 1/3 hydrogen pyroxide for about ten minutes and then rinsed with water.......they do make SS needle valves but they are more expensive.
