Look at this design please

Post by Fretman124 » Wed Nov 15, 2006 10:16 pm

Try not to be distracted by the outrageous claims and the obvious eye candy. I'm trying to figure out why this guy bulds his stills this way. Could one or some of you experts please explain?

I'll be building a keg still in the next couple months and am looking at designs. Just wondering about the logic behind this one. Could someone also explain how to post links?

just a pot still with a thumper you can build it for a fraction of the cost and have a much better product.

Partial Pot, Partial reflux, with a side of a thumper.

I do not think that "thumper" will do much of anything. It is simply too small (from what I have read, since I do not have a thumper at this time). It might help for the first liter or two of output, but a keg full of 12% will output at least 5L of 96% but on this setup they would probably target 8L of 75% (if the thumper was large enough), but will probably end up with 12L or so of 40-45%. After that first liter or so, I do not think the thumper helps any more, and may actually strip out some strength.

However, for doing something like gin, I think that little "thumper" would work great.

He builds it that way because you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, and thems pretty good odds.

is that thumper OSHA approved??? seems downright foolish to hang a glass jar of flammable liquid over the edge of the boiler like that.

There are lots of great designs out here for potstills, reflux stills and hybrids. better and cheaper IMHO. Better sources for info too, but I challenge anyone to produce better eye candy....

Who is that guy? Does he read this forum?

That is not mile high.

It is the "still drinking" web site. They are not the same.

The best I've ever gotten from my venom with the thumper is 75%.
By the time the run is finished, the thumper is 3/4 full. That's with a 20 qt. boiler.

Jed, you've mentioned the venom with thumper before... What is the venom? Is it a style of rig, or just a comercially available model?

Venom is just a "model" from these guys. Their home site is:
