A gin basket for ~0.64 USD

Post by shochu »

I'm thinking about trying gin, and I wanted to do the vapor infusion method a try. I was thinking about using those stainless mesh tea balls, but when I was in a kitchenware shop I saw something and a light bulb popped out of my head...
Uhm... a stainless kitchen strainer for a bit more than half a dollar... I wonder if...

I decided to pay the exorbitant amount to make it mine and try to make it work. So I did my little urawaza:
I took the PTFE gasket of my 2" section and started using a potato skin peeler to widen it so I can fit the sink strainer in it. It's very easy, but you have to go slowly but surely to get an uniform smooth inner surface.
And here it is. I tested it and it seals perfectly. Now it's time to use it in a real run. :)

Interesting design, Shochu. Very resourceful. Do you have a short column section that fits over the gasket? Perhaps your glass column section so you can see the botanicals in the "sauna".

I checked one of those as a possible marble holder... In fact it's still down on the workbench in the basement... Nobody has missed it - yet...

Sweet deal. This looks like yet another excellent choice for the triclamp column club.

Old trick, but good.
Seems like a decent strainer you could use for packing as well, the ones with finer mesh doesn't work that well and might cause chocking.

Thanks for this. I've been over thinking a gin basket for my rig but this looks just perfect. Thanks.

I don't think there is near enough space to hold the volume of botanicals you will need.

It doesn't need to "hold" any. Just stop them from falling into the boiler.
