packing idea

getting tired of buying copper packing to pack ss column, was wondering if anyone sees a problem with packing a column with 1/4 or 5/16 copper rings cut from a length of pipe, sorta use them like raschig rings?? I know a plumber that can obtain all the scrap copper I need

Yes, will work fine.
I made a lot of curls of copper thread, the kind used in home electricity nets.

That will work...just be sure to clean them thoroughly before you fill them in the column.
However, you'll discover a lower HETP opposed to the copper mesh....so the efficiency of the column drops a little.

I have discovered you can only clean copper mesh so many times and it seems to start to get brittle, I just soak mine in a vinegar/water solution then rinse, i run my still a lot, is there a different way I should be cleaning it? I just use column for strips and then run them through my 8 plate 4" flute

another idea I kicked around was the ground wire that is in electrical wire cut into thousands of pieces or even rolled into tight spirals kinda like small springs????

Certainly, you could do that.
You just have to be sure you can clean AND dry it afterward.
If moisture gets trapped inside between the wires, it will oxidate pretty easy....leaving you with some green stuff in there.
