Bad Alcoholmeter?

Post by En Bee »

I bought this Alcoholmeter from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009C ... UTF8&psc=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
The one I received is different. The scale with the paper hangs below the neck. Does this seem like it could be right?
Paper hanging below neck.

It's an Aye-aye.

could be perfectly OK, could be wrong. You'll just have to test it and find out.
Plop it in a liquid of known ABV and see if it matches.
Always impatient. But learning.

Check it with a commercial liquor of known alcohol content.

-OR- And I say this with great risk of argument from others:
Get a bottle of isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy and test it. (Most isopropyls I get here are 70%)

Yes yes yes isopropyl is a different density and a hundred reasons why it shouldn't work, but it has always worked for me.
If your reading matches the bottle, you're close enough.

Just rinse thoroughly and air dry afterwards!

I await my flaming...

It's funny how the mind works.
I suggested the water test to someone at the brew shop with the same question.
He was unconvinced, and insisted a "positive" reading and wasn't happy until I told him about the isopropyl.
