Lava pebbles if your refluxing

Cheaper and way better surface ratio

Super happy with my 1/4 - 1/2” size in my 2” column

Assuming they're the same shape, I would say there's no appreciable difference other than price.
Borosilicate rings are insanely high priced compared to the ceramic.

I gotcha, thanks as that's the most important part, the cost. Mine are through the roof latley which has me rethinking things and a switch over to electric. I'm fixing to build a new stainless rig out of schedule ten stainless pipe say 16 inch diameter all tig welded. I'm looking at packing it and was looking into Rashing rings.

I am fanatical about cleaning. I don't know if I have to be, but I would rather not find out I do by making bad batches. So my concern would be about ease of cleaning. Otherwise, the packing is just a means of creating surface volume. Glass or ceramic doesn't matter.
Along the same vein. I have lots of pumice available locally. I am located close to Mt. St. Helens. Pumice is obviously porous, so it might indeed be high in surface area (depends upon the specific pumice) but I wonder about cleaning. Unless I learned otherwise, I would fear it would tend to trap contaminates. I may try packing a small still column with lava and distill several runs of water to test for contamination. Thanks for the idea.
