Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
Hello,
I've been looking into ways to more safely store low wines or high abv heads, Amazon appears to have a bunch of 304 stainless steel jerry cans. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with using them? It looks like I can remove all the rubber/plastic on most models.

Another good choice is stainless milk cans. Food grade and many styles have no seals.

As Bluefish stated, milk can are one option, so are olive oil drums, which are available in many sizes, plus soda kegs..

I use an old Stainless Steel Fusti that I found at an olive oil store.
They had a few posted on ebay for really cheap.
Keep an eye on ebay and craigslist for this type of unit. If the spigot is bad, you can change them out or get a stainless steel plug.
Cheers,
Irish

Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
There's stainless steel beer kegs of all sizes on eBay, Craig's List and on other seller websites. The prices of kegs seem more affordable in comparison to other stainless containers I've seen. Most stainless containers appear to be way over priced for what they are. Kegs are really tough, readily available and seem cheaper to me.

This seems to be lost in time
Make sure the person your buying the keg from
Be it company or the weird guy down the block
Actually owns the keg legally
You may be feeling non the wiser with a $50 10 gallon keg
But the person who that keg belonged to got jipped
Potentially losing them a few hindered dollars

How do they "prove" that they own the keg legally? Paperwork? A receipt?Fiddleford wrote:This seems to be lost in time

IF the person you bought the keg from is a garbage human being and stole it ... just how does that injustice fall onto the purchaser?
So the solution is to not purchase a keg if they don't have paperwork (or whatever)? So no one ever buys the keg ... does that solve or in any way rectify the injustice? There will always be someone who will buy the keg that isn't so social justice sensitive.

Fencing stolen goods is just as criminal as stealing it in the first place.NineInchNails wrote: IF the person you bought the keg from is a garbage human being and stole it ... just how does that injustice fall onto the purchaser?
Always impatient. But learning.
Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
I wonder how eBay & Craig's list is still in business then. I don't think I've EVER ONCE asked a seller to "prove" that they didn't steal the item I'm interested in purchasing. I imagine that the 1 or 2 people who have ever done that were ignored, the item was sold anyway and no one cares.rubelstrudel wrote:Fencing stolen goods is just as criminal as stealing it in the first place.NineInchNails wrote: IF the person you bought the keg from is a garbage human being and stole it ... just how does that injustice fall onto the purchaser?
You know what else is criminal? Probably what the person intends to do with the keg LOL.

You don't want to be "donged" by a mod...
The truth is what we're trying to do is make our hobby legal, enjoyable and safe...all that's being said here is "be considerate" your local HB store has beer kegs that were purpose made for the hobby, if you think something maybe "off" with a product, don't buy it.
We're all trying to be friends here...if you want friends, be friendly...just saying

That's the conundrum of buying a keg
If your a welder or know a reputable welder
Get a the old SS sink from someones house renovation
People are glad when you take their garbage they don't need dispose of it
Clean it well and there's your container right there
Skip all that crap and buy a keg from a small business
They'll love ya for it

Obviously my metalworking skills suck.Fiddleford wrote:That's the conundrum of buying a keg

Yeah I started to work with a sink.
Got my son to weld a (maybe one inch, one and a quarter?) copper pipe right through both bowls of a double sink for a pre-heater (a la Charentais still, lots of pictures on Google)
And there it sits and occasionally I wonder; now what?
MAYBE separate the two bowls (and cut through my copper pipe) and weld one bowl upside down on top of the other;
join the cut ends of the copper pipe with a U-bend;
make a big opening on the top of the 'new bowl' with a lid (maybe four or six inch);
fit a drain to the new 'bottom' which could incorporate a tap and a pipe to deliver the pre-warmed liquid to the still on demand.
What do you metalworkers think?
Fiddleford?
It would really be helpful.

Geoff
I go to the store and get a keg of beer. 90$+90$deposit.
3 weeks later I take it back and they won't accept it and refund my deposit after two weeks...
The beer company, anheisuer bush, is down the road so I take it there. They can do nothing about the deposit, its gone. They say that they won't accept their own, clearly labeled keg back because the store took my money as a deposit but that I can bring it any time and either have it rinsed and filled with beer for 65$ or just swap it for a full one for 70$ but that they can't take the one back without giving me another due to the deposit paid to the store... Also that this is a common problem people have.
What then?
And yes, this actually happened to me.
Yes,i kept the keg. Yes it's a boiler now. No, no paperwork ever changed hands.
Remember not to blow yourself up,you only get to forget once!

Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
Hi Smee,
I'm a fan of pretty, and the Fusti options are pretty, for about the same price I'm seeing those Jerry cans on Google. Though, if you go second hand, that'll be your best option for most type of solutions. I posted a little bit on some Fusti's I've prepared. Didn't remove the seals, but did wrap everything several times with PTFE tape. viewtopic.php?f=88&t=71589
If you do go the "join two stainless bowls together route, I've seen that Costco often sells sets of 3 stainless bowl kits for pretty cheap. Pick up two kits and you could build 3 containers: small, medium, large.

Exactly how does one "prove" they own a keg legally?
Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
Either a receipt, or a permission slip from the Pope.NineInchNails wrote:Exactly how does one "prove" they own a keg legally?
Honestly not sure it's a viable process.

Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
You can start by asking them where they got it
If they say they got it on deposit ask them if they know the keg isn't actually theirs
I'm not trying to start an argument about kegs here
I don't like to argue nothing is solved and everyone just gets upset
If your actually curious about it call up a keg distro and ask how to avoid bootleg kegs
I don't run into this problem because the beer depot doesn't deposit kegs anymore
And hbs's don't either you need to buy them online

What about just using a glass carboy with foil on top to store feints or stripped wash?

Absolutely, but ONLY if you get the prior owner to "prove" that it wasn't ever stolen at any point from the day the carboy was manufactured otherwise you're a garbage human being.MtRainier wrote:What about just using a glass carboy with foil on top to store feints or stripped wash?

Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
Depending on how much you store glass carboys are probably a lot cheaper, don't have to deal with fabricating them either
At the HBS here you can get a carboy for 37 bucks, not bad really considering a vessel that size made from SS would be around $150
Just make absolute certain its in a place where nothing will break it and have proper cork material
Plus when you buy a carboy from someone you don't gotta worry about breaking the law

You don't have to, but if you do so without the permission slip, it'll spontaneously revert to plain water. The Baker wrote: Do you have to use holy water then?

These would be great for aging of product if not for the plastic lids.
http://a.co/d/balhtoK" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
They have a little date dial so you can even set the date it went in.
maybe it could be covered with foil and then the lid screwed on...

Re: Stainless Steel Jerry Cans For Storage?
After breaking way too many glass carboys and demijohns I started using 20L Sanke kegs for storage:
The handles are very convenient and comfortable to carry, they're stackable, sterilizable and virtually indestructible. For the price of five new 5L carboys I can get one used 20L Sanke keg that will endure lifetimes of use.
You can cap them in several ways. I've re-used the disassembled spear by welding an SS cap on it and replacing the main gasket with PTFE. You can also just plug them with a cork (I use this method w/ an airlock if I need to ferment in them), but the easiest method is to use a 2" tri clamp and cap.
